Buck, I just listened to the solo from Dominance and Submission for a gazillionth time and that is one of the hottest bits of guitar playing ever. You were on fire for that one. What scale is that based on? I'll see if I can't get my fat little fingers to replicate your playing. Thank you, Steve Ford

That solo really is fantastic. I've known dozens of guitar players that could play the riff but none have managed anything like the solo. I'm also really staggered by the number of people outside the BOC community that actually haven't heard the track. Its great to play it to someone for the first time; the reaction is always the same, their jaw plummets!

Thank you, Steve Ford Hey steve, ive played the guitar for the past 10 years and was mesmerized when i found out about boc and Buck. In most of his solos he uses dorian scale and likes to add blues scale in between as well.

I know I’m a few years too late to this conversation (and I'm not Buck), but oh well. The short answer is F# minor pentatonic with Blues and Dorian mixed in.
But, if you want to know about other Buck Dharma solos, you may want to know Pentatonic/Blues, Dorian (as previously mentioned), Aeolian (aka Natural Minor), Harmonic Minor, and maybe Mixolydian. Although, I doubt Buck is relying on a lot of scale shapes or even an exact scale, and more so the notes the are in the song chords. For instance, the Last Days of May solo is based around the Andalusian cadence or i-VII-VI-V (Bm-A-G-F#). The first 3 chords are contained in the Aeolian mode, but the last one isn’t. The V chord in a minor key implies Harmonic or Melodic Minor. So, guess what? He uses Aeolian notes for the first 3 chords and then uses notes from the Harmonic Minor scale for the last chord. But again, he probably isn’t “thinking” in terms of scales, he’s likely “thinking” in terms of chord tones (plus a lot of chromatics as well).
Anyways, here are some examples of the different “scales” being used (I could be wrong so do take it with a grain of salt):
Dominance and Submission, Subhuman = Dorian + Blues 7 Screaming Dizbusters, Flaming Telepaths (outro solo) = Harmonic Minor + Blues Astronomy, Don’t Fear the Reaper (outro solo) = Aeolian + Blues Last Days of May, Veteran of the Psychic Wars = Aeolian + Harmonic Minor The Great Sun Jester, Buck's Boogie (certain parts of it anyway) = Mixolydian

Last Days of May, Veteran of the Psychic Wars = Aeolian + Harmonic Minor I think Last Days of May definitely has some blues in there, no?

That solo does rock, I also really like the solos in the ETL version, one of the highlights on that live album for me, very inspiring.
