Thanks to Gerard for alerting me to this "official" long sleeve t-shirt design from the UK tour - if you've read 1984 and know what Winston Smith's job was, you'll understand how he would have appreciated this design:

Saw them on the merch stand at Manchester last Friday thought I was mistaken due to ill advised alcohol intake but clearly not.

Legal/business reasons/justifications or pettiness? I'll have to reserve judgement. One could reasonably deduce then that by airbrushing Al/Joe/Allen out of the official artwork then EB won't acknowledge their existence by singing *any* BOC songs that they had a hand in composing/arranging/recording?

I hadn't anticipated the reaction the shirt is getting here. The graphic started out as a tour pass, didn't know there was a shirt also. We wanted to mark the anniversary of Secret Treaties, and it wouldn't be representative to have the brothers Bouchard and Allen Lanier on a current BOC image.
Melne did the graphic I think, and for a goof she sent Steve Schenck a version where the shepards were replaced with poodles. Maybe we should have gone with that..

Sorry, I saw them in Glasgow and Manchester and just couldnt bring myself to purchase one. Probably the first time ever I have never bought a tshirt at a BOC gig that I didnt have. I get your explanation Buck, but I thought it was in very poor taste!

Well, if it's the anniversary of Secret Treaties, it's also the anniversary of the band that composed and played the album. Without this band and those band members, there is no Secret Treaties.

I'm with Deeg and Frog on this, erasing the Bouchard Bros and AL appears to me to be disrespectful, even if that was not the intent.

I'd like to see the poodles! I'd also like to see a Secret Treaties anniversary tour with full album performance.

I doubt any intentional slights or malice was intended. Maybe a bit questionable in taste. I don't care for it appearance wise; just doesn't appeal to me, but hey, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Easy fix.

Didn't see this having sinister intentions either myself, though this is still poor taste, in my opinion. I'm all down for new BOC merch for the current lineup, but that should only go as far as having new, original designs. The t-shirt/pass are not original, as this was altering already-popular album art. If BOC still wants to pay tribute through merch, that's completely fine as long as it doesn't involve unintentionally pulling a Bill Ward. Even if it were done a different way by having the entire current lineup in the altered artwork instead, it still wouldn't feel right, because: 1. It's still not original. 2. Paying tribute means also giving thanks to those who originally contributed to the album by spreading good word of their names; even if they're no longer with BOC. Which leads to... 3. Rehashing altered older promotional works like the Secret Treaties album art will never be compatible with the current lineup, because 3 out of 5 members of the current modern lineup did not work on that album.
Keep going with the current lineup, but don't forget to give past members a nod. Should Secret Treaties or any other official art/photos with past lineups shown be used again, then it should be used without removing or replacing former members. Reserve the older promotional stuff for the old and keep it separated from the new lineup.
If there's anything that needs to be created for the new lineup, treat it with passion by giving it its own unique visual imagery.
