The new merch disscussion prompted me to resume my diary entries. Last time, I had just attended my first show, there was maybe 1000 in attendance, whatever it takes to fill a basketball court, SRO. I remember being confused, at first, thinking Eric was the lead guitar player, and not sure which one was singing which song. All of that was cleared up, in short order, because I was lucky enough to catch 4 more shows, during 1974 and 1975. Not counting the show in 74 where BÖC had to bail because they blew the power grid, and there wasn’t enough juice for their system and light show. The supporting acts went ahead and played, Friigid Pink and Pavlov’s Dog. I saw David Surkamp, the leader of Pavlov’s Dog, open for BÖC 22 years later, and he retold the story, this was the night I met Buck and Eric, 23 years ago. Time flies. Seems like we’ve known each other a lot longer, though. Maybe cuz I had seen them two or three times a year, every year except one, between 73 and then.
Those shows are such fond memories. Studio catalog aside, they belong in the HoF purely based on the live performances. During this phase, alone, in two years, I saw so many bands get blown out by BÖC...Kiss, Rush, Aerosmith, Rory Gallagher, Kansas, Starz, Hydra, I’m sure more that I can’t think of, offhand. The band got noticeably better, during this time period, I’ll never forget the shows in Indiana in 75, with the synthesizers and Harvester of Eyes with that jam in the middle, and so many fans walking in, surprised that they were headlining, while walking out in a pure daze, totally possessed by the Cult. I remember when On Your Feet came out, we all cut up the album sleeves and made those decoupage shellac things in shop class. I still have mine, of the five guitars on one, and the EB and Buck Duckwalk on the other. I only caught 4 shows during this time because I had to rely on friends to take me. I had my first car by the Laser years, a 1972 Chevy Monte Carlo with 4 JBL house speakers in the back seat. I’ll save that for next time, which includes my junior and senior years of high school, and the first year I was on my own.
