Hello, I have a question for you. A fellow I know from Facebook, known as "The Bone Jangler" claims he very briefly was in the band in 1985. He says he's not Jimmy or Tommy and he's not listed on Wikipedia. I realise you may not want to tell me his real name I just wonder if he's being truthful! Thanks for reading!

"Bone Jangler" suggests keyboard player, but as far as I know it was Allen up to Feb 85 (with the last of the "Albert Returns" CA gigs) and then it was Tommy Z until the end of '86, after which it was "Allen Returns"...
Never heard of any Al Pitrelli-type stand-in deals for 1985 - I'd ask the guy for more info - eg any gigs he reckons he played on, etc...

Thanks! The Bone Jangler name comes from him being a "Horror movie host" He plays guitar in his pictures, but he is "in character" and it's hard to tell what he really looks like! Oh well thanks again!

The Bone Jangler name comes from him being a "Horror movie host" Oops - I clearly nailed that one... > He plays guitar in his pictures
Well, funnily enough, when Allen left, that did leave a bit of a hole in their guitar attack - but with Tommy Z on full-time keys, that would have given EB the opportunity to play on Allen's parts, so it would seem to sort of balance out... but could there have been a temporary fill-in guitarist - maybe even playing behind the back-line, maybe just for the first few gigs after Allen left...? Never heard of one in 1985, though... When Allen had a leave of absence in 1980, Steve Schenck filled in on keys and according to roadie Sam Judd, Ross the Boss played guitar on a couple of gigs (from behind the stage) to help pad out the sound. It should be said that Ross says he has no memory of this, so who knows...? but Sam was always pretty spot on in these sort of details, so I tend to lend credence to that. Anyway, if that is true, that sort of sets a precedent for a similar occurrence at a later date... Maybe Buck can shed some light on this conundrum...?

I'm betting it's Phil Grande. He claimed to have done lots of the guitar tracks on Ninja.

I've just looked it up and I think you're right - I was just thinking about live, I didn't think about studio - but check this link I've just found - this says he joined in March 1985, thus making BOC "a sextet" (but left "after just a few weeks"): musiciansolympus.blogspot.com/2010/04/philgrande-guitar.htmlSo if that chronology is right, it doesn't look like he can have played on any Ninja tracks....

Yes I remember reading somewhere that Phil Grande (famous session guitarist & guitar player in Joe Cocker's band) played on Club Ninja but I don't think he is credited. Sadly we can't ask him as he died earlier this year.

Sadly we can't ask him as he died earlier this year. I've just checked and the credit says "additional guitars"... so maybe that March 85 dating on that above link was too early... though I'm not sure of the exact CN recording dates... But OK, let's say it's accurate and that he did play on "Ninja" - my question is: if you're a contributing session musician to a band's record, does that make you a "member" of that band...? Because I had a look on his FB page after I read the original poster's comments and the guy said: "Did you know that I was briefly a member of Blue Oyster Cult? True story. So excited to see "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" tomorrow!"It's looking a bit like the Jeff Kagel/Krishna Das affair all over again...

If he was hired as a session musician for the album then no he is not a member of the band. But it appears that he thought he was. Maybe Buck can clarify Phil Grande's role?

Also looking down his obituary there are images of records he worked on including Club Ninja & BOC are mentioned earlier as one of the people he worked or toured with.

Phil Grande to one side for a moment, who's this "Bone Jangler" guy then, who says he was ALSO in BOC in 1985, because he's definitely STILL with us and updating his Facebook page every day...
