We'll discuss all aspects of "The Symbol Remains" when it comes out. I'd like you all to hear it before we dicker over stuff like the cover art. BTW, review copies of the record have gone out to music journalists so they can review it in time for October publication. So some folks have heard it already. I don't know if reactions are embargoed until then, or if you'll start reading about it sooner.
I'm getting positively giddy at this point. The new album comes out on my dad's birthday, and he's the one who went to every Blue Öyster Cult show with me. My dad is not exactly a rock music aficionado: his record collection is mostly R&B, Memphis Soul, Motown, etc., and he mostly listens to the bluegrass channel on Sirius. He has some Queen records, but he was never really a "rock" guy. But DAMN does he love Blue Öyster Cult. He wasn't familiar with them when he took me to my first show in Berwick Pennsylvania in 2002. I was 16 at the time (and the club let me in even though it was a 21+ show, which we didn't know when we bought the tickets), and I couldn't go alone since I hadn't gotten my license yet. He was expecting to just enjoy some live music in general but he was blown away by the band. He especially loved Last Days of May and the extended solos between Allen and Buck. Ever since then he's loved them. So when the new record comes out, I want to buy him and ship him a vinyl copy so he can spin it at home (he's since moved to North Carolina and me to Delaware).
Now, my uncle Mike, HE was a rock guy. He was 9 years younger than my dad so he grew up at the time when BOC and Deep Purple were putting out their most commercially successful work, and he really got into it. Sadly, he succumbed to liver failure 6 years ago, but he and I shared an enthusiasm over BOC as well. I remember when I told him I was going to a concert, and when I told him it was to see Blue Öyster Cult, he smiled and quoted "I love you like sin, but I won't be your pigeon." There he was pulling out a deep track lyric on me! But I was prepared with "dare-devil, she-devil, printers devil, evil." I had listened to Agents of Fortune a ridiculous amount of times by that point. He kind of had a voice like Albert, too.
So, when this new album comes out, and I'm sending copies to my dad as well because there is a family connection here. And when I send it to him I know he'll call me when he gets it and I know what he'll say. He'll say the same thing he said when that show in 2002 was over. He'll say "that Buck Dharma can PLAY!"
