oh, well, the saddest song I know is one I wrote with my bandmates which tells the story of a couple on dope that couldn't save each other from falling. it's called Broken Lives and, believe me people, rather sad it is indeed

Last Days Of May is pretty sad. The oldies like Patches by Dicky Lee,Teen Angel by Mark Dinning,Tell Laura I Love Her-Ray Peterson,Last Kiss-J.Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers(long before Pearl Jam) and Echo by The Emotions who in their concert performance always introduced it as "We had the honor of writing the saddest song of 1962).

Unpopular opinion, in The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia, the little sister is more responsible for her brother hanging than the sheriff, judge, or the backwoods southern lawyer.

Here's one that's probably more bizarre than it is sad. "Timothy" by The Buoys. I remember when this came out in the early 70's and some of the radio stations were banning it.

When I was growing up, in the early '70's, two songs that were affecting were "Alone Again Naturally" by Gilbert O' Sullivan and "Seasons In The Sun" by Terry Jacks. When I was real small "Puff The Magic Dragon" would make me cry. Still does. That damn Jackie Paper.

"Can you imagine the way I felt....when I couldn't unfasten my safety belt" one of my top 5 saddest lyric lines....

This person hadn’t heard of BÖC and asked what songs they did. Dad’s response: “Joan Collins Has Risen From the Grave” and “Puff the Magic Dragon.”

"Timothy" was written by Rupert Holmes, who was in The Buoys, and later had a hit with "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)." He says the song was intentionally controversial, to create a buzz. Holmes has done Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Podcast, where he tells the story. He's a funny guy, actually and very successful. www.gilbertpodcast.com/rupert-holmes/

One of my favorites. My wife and I joke that it's the song about two assholes who deserve each other LOL
