This is catchy as hell. The general vibe of the song would have fit right in with Mirrors, but that crunchy riff feels like it would have fit on Heaven Forbid, too.

It was intentional writing a power-pop song to go with the lyric.

And is that David Lucas doing a wee cameo in the Box In My Head video?

For me, this track has a "Flat Out 2" vibe to it - it doesn't scream "BOC", but maybe that's the point, I dunno... but those lyrics... maybe I'm in my own box in my head here, but I have a six-foot long box I'd like to bury nearly all of John Shirley's entire lyrical output in...

On one hand, I totally feel you, because Shirley's lyrics can sometimes be..... clunky (I Just Like to be Bad is certainly... a song), but on the other hand, Pearlman's lyrics are pretty weird and don't exactly roll off the tongue either. Yet, they've made up a huge part of what is classic about the band. I've grown pretty fond of many Shirley lyrics after just a few listens listens. I have to admit that See You In Black has some clunky lines, but overall it's a badass song and listening to it in the car gives me a severe case of leadfoot. But you know what else has some really weird lyrics that don't exactly flow with ease? The Subhuman. And that song kicks ass. We all love it. It's one of the best tracks on a number of fans' favorite album of the group. I take this lyric for example: Forest keys and whirlwind cold Green keys too and keys of gold And even locks that don't explode When the skies become a scroll ....what the fuck does that even mean? I mean... I don't even particularly care what it means; It evokes a feeling as music tends to do, and I like it for that. It creates an image no matter how abstract. Shirley's lyrics aren't nearly as inscrutable, but they create their own vibe in a sense, and it really does fit in with the BOC sci-fi/horror connection. Now is the time the moon is in alignment With the unknown zodiac, the untold sign Of the fiery maniac within each breast Awaits a stirring irredescent whirring Of a six eyed god whose wings beat In a time so odd, so very odd And we're all lost, all of us blessedly lost I don't know how much of those lyrics are Shirley and how much are Eric, but they paint the same kind of picture as BOC sort of always has. I agree Shirley has his share of clunkers, but generally I think he also hits it out of the park more times than not.

I love it! Song, and video. If you want different lyrics or more guitar, there’s always “Here Comes That Feeling”. (Which I also love!)

Love it....the more i listen to these two tunes (the officially released ones ) the more I like them.In fact, I can't decide which I like better, That Was Me or this....both are solid rock tunes that bring a smile to my face! Solid riffs, good hooks & great vocals on both....& what's wrong with John Shirley lyrics? I love his books so....& if you can't get his or Pearlman's lyrics....or Meltzer's etc., just get high & it's all good....

There’s a fox in my box and he’s eating the lox... Richie and EB look to be having a grand time as the "Box Back-up Singers." The Temptations got nothing on those lads.
