According to the list I was looking at they didn't perform that all that many times. I kinda created an artificial minimum entry qualification just from keeping the poll from being 30+ choices. I figured it was reasonable to say they either performed it more than ten times and/or it's on an official release. Kept it simple.
Substitute was actually officially released on The Columbia Albums Collectiön Sampler.
I had no idea. I didn't even know there was a Sampler.

of course, we could say that including a track in the sampler that's not in the collection is quite strange, but not stranger than issuing a complete album played live minus one track...

... and what about "Substitute"? It only counts if Buck imitated Townsend's windmill.

by the way, hunting promo CDs either for collectable purposes or for getting hold of just a single unreleased track is quite a pain in the arse

by the way, hunting promo CDs either for collectable purposes or for getting hold of just a single unreleased track is quite a pain in the arse It is a daunting task. Easier now with the internet and whatnot. I still remember rummaging through a shop in Chicago and finding John Shirley's band The Panther Moderns' album Red Star, which has See You in Black on it. I have no idea where the hell that CD is now because I listened to it once and packed it away when I moved, and I'm sure it's still in some of the boxes of CDs in my basement. I have them all ripped to my hard drive, and the only CD's I keep on display in my house are the ones I know I like to take in the car with me sometimes or put on the stereo downstairs. That was SUCH a find, though. Most of the things I have that I really love, all the promos and rare singles and stuff, were just lucky finds in random places. My favorite record shop of all time is a place called Shady Dog in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. The guys who own it, Mike and Dave, are real cool dudes and if you were a regular and they knew you'd spend big whenever you'd come in, they'd throw discount after discount at you. They had no reason to do that given that we'd buy so much stuff anyway, but they did it because they loved the loyalty. I'm sure it inspired goodwill, too, so it had its purpose, but the music sells itself for me. If I wanted something I was buying it lol.

It occurred to me thinking of it that this means See You In Black is technically a cover, but really it's just the lyrics from Shirley they used and none of the music. The two songs sound NOTHING alike. If I can find that CD I'll see if I can upload a track or something, because I don't see it on youtube or anywhere else.
