Appreciated E.B. saying his vocals had been a bit wobbly at times. Not that he hadn't been cognizant I l know he went to every doctor he could but time takes something from you-it does for almost anyone especially singing as heavy as E.B. did his whole career.

Yup. Time isn't always kind to singers. Not everybody can maintain their voices. I'm grateful for how he stands up there and gives it his all show after show. The fact that he delivered the vocals on One Step Ahead of the Devil at 56 is proof enough that while his voice may have started diminishing, he gives it his all. I mean, that was close to some Rob Halford-level shit. Hearing him on this record giving it his all again and again is so fucking badass.

That Newsday thing was disappointing, on the tech end. Embarrassing.

I was so disappointed that I couldn't listen to it last week initally. At least I got to eventually listen to the corrected version. My favorite part was when Eric talked about their initial skepticism about making another record: "We're not just gonna do B-sides!"

Yes which was weird as on that Cincy show in 2000 and the first BB Kings show when I met Lib Monkey E.B. sounded great but wasn't great on all of the LDN tunes.I first noticed around '93 Eric sounded different during ETI.So it's been a tough road for a guy we've all loved in his heyday. If you ever want to hear someone whose voice was gone try John Sebastian during his HOF induction.Over the last 20 something years I've heard clips of Jagger sounding horrible too.Life goes on be thankful we have what we have now.

Precisely this. Go see your favorite acts when they get around to playing again because you just don’t know. I’m still pretty down because of the passing of EVH. So much so that it’s impacting my listening to TSR. I’ve been waiting 19 years for this album, and I want to just sit down and play it over and over, front to back, but I’ve been preoccupied in my upset over the loss of Eddie. Sorry if that sounds strange. I’m sure I’ll snap out of it before too long. I did the same thing when Neil Peart passed.

I’ve lost a number of people this year, and am finally at the point where I can listen to music again. It’ll get better. Thanks. And I’m aware I didn’t know Neil Peart and Eddie Van Halen, but they were major musical influences/heroes as my love of music commenced 40 years ago. So their losses feel like parts of my youth falling away. At the end of 2018, we had learned that our 8 year old Bichon-Poo was sick (totally out of the blue), and she passed in early-2019. Two and a half months later, I had unexpected knee surgery and was in the hospital for 3 days. Then, I lost my Mom that July. So needless to say, was really looking forward to 2020. Ha! This is why I’m trying to celebrate the good things, and those things are mainly music-related: BOC (naturally), the Tom Petty “Wildflowers” boxed set, new Springsteen, new Albert Bouchard, heck even the new Patty Smyth.

And I agree about EVH. I've already listened to The Best of Both Worlds twice since he passed. I mean if The Beatles gave rise to pop & rock music as we know it, EVH changed the course of music in a similar way for hard rock and metal. He created a style of music that lasted from 1978 through to the grunge movement.

Eddie Van Halen was the Hendrix of his generation. But unlike Hendrix, he spawned a thousand imitators, and changed the direction of guitar rock. Unfortunately, most of the imitators weren't anywhere near as good as Eddie, even as they played a zillion notes.

Unfortunately, most of the imitators weren't anywhere near as good as Eddie, even as they played a zillion notes. I remember a friend in high school telling me that if I liked EVH then I would LOVE Yngwie Malmsteen. Talk about generic and soulless. I know I can't play guitar even close to that fast, but it bored the heck out of me. I own his Concerto for Electric Guitar & Orchestra because it works incredibly well in that context, but his rock music is forgettable to me. I do love Steve Vai, however, simply because he is a great compositional writer for guitar. There is clearly purpose in everything he plays.

Led to a pretty bad habit IMO I can only listen to a good shred if it really is necessary and really enhances what I'm hearing.Eddie also knew how to write songs and his playing enhanced the music.
