Hah! Well, I'm glad the Dead are, albeit indirectly, responsible for ONE great song LMAO Yes, "Who'll Stop the Rain" was one of my favorites of theirs. Actually I liked a lot of their stuff. Being the musically challenged geek that I am, I always thought it was about the troops being out in the rain in Vietnam. Was surprised when I heard the story in the video, but I still think there is a little government protest content thrown in. Coincidence that TODAY I just found the unopened remastered CCR CD my wife gave me for birthday or Christmas. Guess I better light it up. I absolutely LOVE Creedence and I never knew this story. I thought it was about Vietnam too.

Don't know if was always like this, but at some point folks starting reading really important meanings into rock song lyrics. I think it started in the '60's I wish those same folks would share their insights on any meanings - important or otherwise - that might help to explain this one Blow away, Grow away, Throw your lousy dough away Watchin sideburns growing - gettin' lengthier than the hay I'm a magic man with a magic plan In a royal exclamation, I'm the Royal Duster Dan
When you pull the string I'm just another favorite toy But spend your time with candy and your dentist gets annoyed
When I am a stooge it never fails to fail to fail Sit me on a toy stool I want the sand that's in your pail and a boat that sails
If I was a realie I'd want a scad of fester sores Got none now but then I'd want a million hundred more
Scaffold on the wrist It does the same thing as a tape For broken wrist the treatment Vitamins that have the shape of a busted grape
Ragamuffin, Tagamuffin, Sour dough ruffin muffin Desperation jargon spittle-powered by a cork I'm the magic man with a magic plan In an awesome thunderbolt, I'm the Royal Dumpling Stan

I can't speak for him, but Richard Meltzer would free associate somewhat in the style of John Lennon, especially in the early SWU days.

I would guess that the Beat Generation writers (Kerouac, Bukowski etc.) had an influence as well. Speaking of Lennon, it was a gas watching his aforementioned free association in action in the Beatles Get Back documentary.

I like Genesis’ Home by the sea a lot better now that I know it’s about ghosts.
