Treaties and FOUO are overrated. I place neither in my top 5. Astronomy and Flaming Telepaths are not the best two songs on Treaties, Burnin’ For You doesn’t belong on FOUO, because it is way better than the rest of the album. Burnin’ For You should have been on Flat Out, but even without it, Flat Out is better than most BÖC records. How SOBACKian of you Martso.

The Four Seasons and the Beach Boys were as good as the Beatles and the Stones.

Burnin’ For You should have been on Flat Out, but even without it, Flat Out is better than most BÖC records. I love Flat Out and have listened to it a lot, but it's comparing apples to oranges to me. I've been in a Flat Out mood and I've been in a BOC mood. Rarely at the same time though. I personally think Astronomy might be the best song in their entire body of work, myself. It has so much going on from the constant hum of the synthesizer, the sparse piano playing, the modal chord structure, the layering, the momentum, the quiet and loud interplay, the Buck's soloing, Eric's voice playing soft and loud more credibly than most mainstream musicians/singers do (I've always hated Steve Perry; he has one setting and he's always there), Albert's ability to get such differentiation out of an incredibly simple pattern, and on and on. I mean, for such a relatively simply-structured song compared to others such as Seven Screaming Diz-Busters or The Vigil or The Marshall Plan, it has so much thought and care put into its execution. Everything is so tight. You might say that they were in the pocket of the moment Okay I'm sorry lol I'm not in any way saying you're wrong because taste is completely subjective, just that I totally think Astronomy is the best song on that album and possibly in their body of work as a whole. because they executed the same level of care through most of their discography. I just think Astronomy has a little of everything. Almost like it's the band's thesis statement.

It's not one of my favourites. * Secret Treaties, though, is my favourite hard rock album of all time, and is certainly rated highly by many rock fans. What are your Top 5 hard rock albums? * Telepaths/Astronomy are my favourite BOC Secret Treaties' tunes, what are yours? * I agree that Burnin' for You probably fits better on Flat Out, and that Flat Out is a an excellent album with or without Burnin'. Which BOC albums are better than Flat Out, in your opinion? Different strokes for different strokes!

I’d put Astronomy live, at or near the top, I just disagree with those who think of the 1-2 punch of those two songs as the holy grail of 1-2 BÖC studio combo’s. I’d put Dominance and ME262 ahead of it, among others, from other albums. Love your description of Astronomy!

Dominance and ME262 Not sure any BÖC albums are better, but if I had to, I’d place FO 2nd, after Spectres. But I’ve listened to Flat Out as much. I do like the live treaties songs as much as any live treatment of any BÖC records. I’m just not that big on the studio version.

I’d put Dominance and ME262 ahead of it, among others, from other albums. Love your description of Astronomy! Live Astronomy is great for epic guitar solos, but I do miss the layering of the studio version. However, Buck's soloing in the "divebomb" thread I posted a little while back in the Talk Exchange is my favorite live version of it. Moreso than on Some Enchanted Evening or any bootleg. As for the love of Secret Treaties and song combos, it is so much harder for me to pick a favorite out of the rest of the album. It's like Side A and Side B are their own 1-2 punch. I mean, the entirety of Side A is just one the best Side As of any album ever committed to record. Definitely love Dominance into ME 262. But then I think about Subhuman into Dominance into ME 262, and then Career... etc. I also really love Cagey Cretins and don't think it gets near enough love. I think part of it comes from the lack of connective tissue between it and Harvester of Eyes. Every other song leads into, crashes into, or otherwise fades into each other, and that song is like an island. But I love the insane lyrics, the frenetic drumming, the singing from Eric and Albert, the mixed-meter main riff. That whole fucking album doesn't have a weak point.

When you put it that way, Lauren...maybe it’s not so overrated, after all. I suspect, looking back, that I didn’t take time to give Treaties a thorough chance, having moved on when OYF came out. I’m just a guitar solo kind of guy, I guess. Plus, I rate them based on how they impacted me when they came out. I still need to re-listen, to the entire cultfolio, with headphones, maybe I’ll reconsider.

I still need to re-listen, to the entire cultfolio, with headphones, maybe I’ll reconsider. I originally studied film before changing majors to something more "practical" in undergrad, and part of my lifelong love of film was the desire to look at all component parts of one both individually, and as a whole, and all the relation to each other. An album is like a film to me. There are a lot of creative visions going into the creation of an album and no two circumstances could ever produce the same album over again. I'm amazed that men in their late twenties produced something of that quality, in much the same way as Rush producing 2112, or Pearl Jam with Ten, etc. When I see an album, I see layers, interdependent but also marvelous on their own. Neal Schon is a BRILLIANT guitarist, but when you listen to the songs of Journey, yeah there are overdubs, but there are many layers you can take away without changing the character of the songs. In Secret Treaties and most BOC records, to me, the layers are essential to those songs. And I don't mean just the individual tracks, but how one track changes the other. How one of Buck's links quotes a vocal line here and there, one of Allen's little flourishes between the other standout moments, etc.

Spectres is NO 1 for me.Astronomy live is still my fave live track -there are a bunch of great versions -I love the '76 version(Fil does a great review of it IMO),Minneapolis '79 for sure and the in-studio live version on Cult Classic.Maybe my three favorite versions.BTW My fave DFTR is the Summerdaze version mainly because Allen's piano is up front in the outro section .Chucks drums are great too.I loved the 40th anniv version too was great seeing Albert totally into it.Best BOC song is tough but ILTN might be my favorite. If anyone's interested my fave bagel is everything(or egg everything).
