My memory of that show was a good object lesson. Alvin and his band had come into the Stony Brook gym locker room where the bands were. He had a guitar and amp back there, and he was playing, and I'm thinking, "this guy isn't so good." He was stiff and almost awkward. Then later he gets onstage and just blazes and the crowd goes nuts. I realized that he was warming his hands and fingers up back there, going slow and carefully. I took the lesson to heart, and ever since I rarely go onstage without warming up for 20-30 minutes first.
