May 7, 2022 - Mickey Gilley at 86
Owner of Gilley's "honky-tonk" in Pasadena, TX. The famous movie Urban Cowboy was inspired by Gilley's. The club in Urban Cowboy was actually shown as Gilley's but I don't know how much was actually filmed there.
Gilley had almost 40 Top 10 country hits.

Joe, The Redneck Country Club had a dedicated section (The Click, expensive seats!) to Mickey Gilley. I actually processed his Credit Cards for a while. Not in his hey-day, but when he was operating out of a Pasadena location. Every time I went there, it reminded me of a Haunted House with sheets over everything, including the Mechanical Bulls (it wasn't his original club, smaller, but prolly everything from the Legend :-). Interesting story and picture! I was never into country music, and we have a TON of places for that close to me, so I didn't know much about his history, or the history of Gilley's itself. Just what I read in the obit. I guess the original bar closed down quite awhile back. At least a lot of the history there seems to be preserved one way or another. Too long a story but my parents and grandparents owned a same-but-different type of establishment back sometime in the late 40's/early 50's. It was on 7 acres with our house back behind on one side and my grandparents on the other side. They closed it before my memories started but the structures were still intact. Those were my play houses as a kid. Bar, indoor dance floor, big red jukebox, pot bellied wood stove, fairly large concrete slab for outside dances out back with safety rails and colored lights, a tamale kitchen bldg - and of course a single gas pump out front. The point is that pretty much ALL history concerning the place is completely gone. Don't know who played there or anything. Somehow all photos got lost or destroyed. The land and everything was sold off as I was entering high school. But I can definitely relate to your comment about a Haunted House.

Joe…
Every town has a town historian. Id go to the town bldg and ask for contact info. I am positive there are so in their 90’s in town they could steer you too…..that may not have been there but know the history of what went on there. These older folks would LOVE to share what they know and may well steer you to others who know more. You would make their day to ask them what they know about it….and there is likely pictures and stories out there. Neat info to pass on to the next generation in your family.

I know, I should have done what you suggested years ago when the city was much smaller (<1 million +) and more people were still alive. I have a pretty good history of my family itself since it started one county over which is much smaller has a lot of history and heritage orgs. My parents used to tell me stories about the bar, but when you're a kid you just take things like that for granted. The county where the bar was located has an awful lot of info online: property records, assumed names, deeds, etc. And one of the universities has been amassing a huge archive of photos with a good searchable index. Nothing. I ran into an old time local country western singer, that sometimes backed up Willie Nelson and had ties to him, and is still performing today. He did not remember the place. I think that he was just getting started about the same time the bar was closing down. He didn't have any good suggestions. Hindsight. We're in the "Closing Chord" thread. For any of you younger (or not) members out here, if your family was in the music business or owned a place where there was live music when you were too young to remember, learn what you can from them and get any photos or tangible documentation while you can - even if you are only slightly interested in such things. Especially if the place wasn't real famous. Unfortunately some day it will be too late.

Bum about Vangelis. He had a style, didn't he? Not much older than the old timers in BOC.
