When buck plays all songs they are in the same tuning as on the studio albums, but when he plays DFTR (as of Some Enchanted Evening) the song is tuned up 1 whole step. How is this possible - does he have another cheeseburger or somehow re-tunes the guitar, or does he have a transposer box he uses?

It's a different guitar (the SG or the SG styled special) & tuned differently than the studio version presumably to allow the rest of the band's singers to provide the backing vocals. And who knows what Buck can do with a transposer box?

Nowadays, DFTR is performed in the original key, Am. Since we did the special 40th Agents of Fortune shows, we've been playing "Reaper' in the original key. Historically, it was hard to get the lead vocal out in the mix in the lower key, but with in-ear monitors and BOC's lower stage volume, we can now do it, and it sounds better and of course more like the studio recording in that key.
In the day, I'd use my Kresiak custom SG tuned up a whole step for "Reaper," and later I would use the Steinberger Trans-Trem to transpose it up.

Am I right in thinking that it stopped being used in the early eighties & if so why? It always sounded & looked like an impressive guitar.

I'd say it stopped being used at the end of the Club Ninja tour, ie when the band disbanded a bit. a year later, I think Buck switched to Steinberger and travelled lighter. (but I may be wrong of course. He played the SG during the 84 tour, though...)

Yes, I can't even remember that it was originally in Am.
