Just wondering what your favourite officially-recorded solos are, and why - both live and studio...?
For example, mine are:
Live: this is hard for me to choose but I have to split my choice into two sub-categories:
Most emotional: Last Days (OYF) - the solos on this are relatively "simple" (by your standards) but they make the hair on the back of my neck stand on end - every note counts and it's just flat out beautiful - and that's why I'm not such a fan of the more modern rendition of this song - the speeded-up version loses something of what I LOVE about this song...
Most exciting: Veterans (ETL) - bloody hell - there are so many phases and parts to this, and it builds to a such satisfying conclusion, with no cock-ups or duff notes, that it has to be the perfect solo...
Honourable Mention: Astronomy (SEE) because in my mind's eye, I can see the lasers swirling round the solo as it kicks up speed so listening to that is always a multi-sensory experience...
Studio: damn - where do you start? All I can say is - this week - my favourite is off Secret Treaties - sometimes I think it's Subhuman or D&S, but I'm thinking it's probably Telepaths - it's not fast or frenetic, but it gets me every time...

I concur with u on the live Last Days and Veteran. When I'm in the car and crank Last Days off OYFOOYK, that solo just moves me each and every time. Sometimes into the other lanes of traffic!
As for studio versions, that's just too tough a call. That can change depending on day and mood. I mean, I love the solos on both Fireworks and GAOL from Spectres, yet I still love the solos on Tattoo Vampire (despite what others think!) and D & S. There's just too much good stuff to choose from!

Even with the short length of the song Last Days from OYFOOYK is chillingly amazing. Nice crisp sound. As always I'm going to bring up the Subhuman from OYF. Gets my juices flowing! The solos from Veterans ( ETL ) and Astronomy ( SEE ) will probably always be the majority favorites as they should be. Studio, the 1st time I played Agents, Reaper blew me and the rest of the people at the party away!

Yeah Buck's Boogie / Maserati GT, how could I forget that. Because too many great solos! I'm throwing in the towel and going to just enjoy listening:

I can't choose a favorite but I'd have to say the OYFOOYK album is full of Buck's magic.

Despite all the negative reactions over the sonic quality I thought the original vinyl of OYFOOYK was outstanding. I played it so much by 1976 I purchased a newer copy to get that original vinyl sound back. It's the vinyl copy I still play to this day unless I'm in a digital mood. I'm a flip flopper! Own tons of vinyl, tons of cd's, tons of downloads. The remastered cd blows that 1st cd version to pieces. Muffled I think describes the 1st generation cd, or flat sounding.

Did you get the Columbia Albums CD Collection Box set Cheryl? Still some decent online prices and you get the bulk of the BÖC material in one shot plus bonus material.
