I know that Buck stated that they came from the psychedelic era like Quick Silver Messenger Service and other bands. I was listening on satellite and heard QSMS "Calvary" and parts of it sounded like the DFTR solo. Has anyone ever noticed this similarity?
Thanks

I'm as much a fan of Happy Trails as anyone else, but I can't say I've ever noticed any areas of DFTR congruence - Sergio Leone, maybe, Alice's Desperado perhaps, here and there, but the Reaper solo, not so much... I'm clearly not hearing what you're hearing, maybe if you could add a timestamp to the part you're referring to, it'd be easier to examine and re-evaluate...
On the wider subject of cross-pollination, BOC have played gigs with QMS - 3 gigs in 1972, 2 in 1974 - plus they also played 2 gigs with Man when JC was with them in March 1975, but I'd guess Cipollina was more an influence in the SWU era... in 1967, San Francisco was ground zero...

By a curious co-incidence, I was just reading an old interview with Albert in which he referred to another gig BOC once played with QMS in Pueblo CO, annoyingly a gig which I've never heard of and don't have listed, so if anybody has any clue about this one, please let me know - even if it's just what venue it could have been:

I think the helicopter gig was in AZ or NM. Can't recall. Check for a show there that meets the criteria.

Makes me want to play the Woodstock version of Ten Years After "Im Goin Home".
Announcing the song Alvin Lee says "This ones called Im Goin Home...by helicopter." then he tears into it full bore. HAha

I’ve never heard anything like the solo, but a couple tunes come to mind as inspired BY the main riff...Message In A Bottle (of course) and Paint By Numbers by Al Stewart.

Yeah, I remember meeting Brian Adams at a festival show up near Seatle soon after DFTR was a hit. We had a pleasant conversation. He said he dug "Reaper." I guess he wrote "Run To You" as a potential follow up to it.
I don't think I ever heard his demo for "Run To You," I think Sandy Pearlman, our manager/mentor rejected the song out of hand, not 'cause it was bad, but 'cause it wasn't BOC's wheelhouse, and going in the musical direction of "Run To You," wasn't a stragegy in his opinion, for BOC.
He was probably right, and the song certainly worked for Brian, it was a big hit, and Brian writes great songs.
My foray into straight pop, "Flat Out," was less succesful commercially, but to me (and posterity) the record still holds up.

It's a great song but I think Sandy P called it right, its not BOC.
Entirely agree about Flat Out, great power pop record. It definitely still holds up & I still regularly listen to it.

Love FO. My fave may be a less poppish tune comparatively ....Cold Wind. Lotta strong tunes on it though.
Love 5:35 a lot too. May be one of few who saw Buck perform it live 2 nites in a row. Wonderful earworm after for a month !
