I originally was going to ask if this guitar was basically the same one used for VOTW, but as I was writing this, I found out that they likely aren't. Does anybody know anything about the Strat that was played by Buck & Albert? For instance: specs, when it was played, what was played for, and what became of it? Another thing is that it looks a lot like the one used for Astronomy in 1979, albeit with some modifications, but that was the one that ended being used for VOTW and Divine Wind, right?

I always loved seeing the rare pics of that guitar too....it looks different than his latter white one with the black pick guard & Floyd...looks like he modified this one early on too, you don't see too many pics of humbucker equipped Strats in the 70s.....
Anyone....?

Fantastic pics. I have seen pictures of Bucks Strat before but beyond noticing that it isn't standard I know nothing.
I do remember Buck using a Strat (not sure if it's this one) in the late seventies on the Mirrors tour, I think he used it on The Vigil & Mirrors but it was a long time ago so I might be wrong on the exact tracks.

Oh & another thing; I don't think that this is the same Guitar that Albert used. I remember that Albert sold his "BOC" Strat on eBay about fifteen years ago & it didn't look like this guitar.

The white Strat is the same guitar, modified over the years. It is in my studio today.

Cool. I figured it was a different guitar 'cuz of the maple neck/fretboard, but those are easily enough swapped......it looks like Buck was doing the Super Strat thing before it was made famous by a certain ( cough ) EVH ....?! Any recollection if those were just Gibson pickups or perhaps the original hot rod humbucker, the DiMarzio Super Distortion?

I'd frankly forgotten about the white pick guard humbuckers, they were Gibson styled, can't remember where they came from, could be Demarzio's but maybe Gibson's. I replaced those with Bill Lawrence blade hum buckers, which were my fav of the three. The third and present is EMG's, which I like, but I miss the magnetic pull of the pole blades of the Lawrence pickups. When I dived the trem, the slack strings would stick to the pickups, then pop off and make a sound. The guitar has an early Floyd Rose trem, #25 made, in fact. No fine tuners.
I modded the guitar myself, making a mess out of the body, routing it out for the hum buckers with a drill. But you can't tell with the pick guard on. It's really yellow now, the original white aged like cheese.
I have recorded with it recently, on TSR, but I can't remember exactly where. I used Steinbergers, and a lot of Kiesel, the Vader and the Strat style, and the white Strat too. I mixed it up so it wasn't always the same sound.

If the current Strat is a 1978 model, what is the guitar in this photo, from 1974?

One has a maple fretboard, the other, a rosewood…

Going of at a slight but related tangent. Buck which guitar did you prefer? The White SG (I know that you sadly lost this one a while back) or the Strat & why?

Photo courtesy of Jeff Turley, who I didn’t meet until nearly two decades later. I was 15, during this show, Kansas and Heartsfield opened, it was very hot, inside and out. Buck only played the Strat for a couple of songs, then switched to the (soon to be White) Red SG.

I don’t doubt that it’s the same Strat, in every picture, as said earlier, fretboards can be changed, but on Bucks Guitar page, it refers to it as a 1978, which can’t be right, if it’s the same guitar, because some of these photos are from the early 70’s, mine, in particular. Buck also played the Strat during my first show, in 1973, for two songs. Seems like by 1975 Buck had focused on the Gibsons. I’ll post some more pics…
