I was actually driving to a show and heard a radio interview with TFF, and they said one was singing LDOM in an elevator in their dorm, and the other invited him to hang and jam. The rest was history…

Apparently the LDOM meeting actually happened at a student party. They didn't know each other at this point. One was playing LDOM & the other joined in which resulted in the inevitable "lets start a band" moment. A then friend of mine who was at at Bristol Uni at the time claimed he was at the party.

Thought it was in a music room the guy was playing LDOM and singing to it. maybe the elevator WAS the music room... Or maybe they were elevated at a party in a music room. I may be confusing it with the Sting meeting, who knows. I do know, though, that their meeting involved one of them singing LDOM and the other being impressed by that.

Last time this question surfaced, I made a point to seek out the sources, just out of interest, and here's what was said in an interview with Roland and Curt:
CS: They came to my flat one time and heard me singing along to a Blue Öyster Cult record, of all things, and Roland asked if I wanted to sing for their band.
RO: He was playing Blue Öyster Cult’s 'Then Came The Last Days Of May', and we were thinking, "Oh yeah, maybe [we've got] a lead singer here." So we were the classic Led Zeppelin format!
They didn't say it wasn't at a "party", so maybe it was...

I'm also pretty sure that they appeared on a Saturday Morning UK kids show (possibly Swapshop) & told the LDOM party story. At the mention of BOC they got slightly giddy & one of them said "name dropper" to the other.

Roland Orzibal is an underrated guitar player. He's good! Tears For Fears' Everybody Loves A Happy Ending is one of my fav albums of all time. His playing is always so perfect for the song, a difficult art to master. Every TTF song is a master class in instrumentation and composition.

Definitely I really like his playing on Everybody Wants To Rule The World. That song is a masterpiece. I also love how neither the keyboard nor the guitar start on the 1 beat.
