Just picked up a 1989 Steinberger XM2 bass last week. I've had my eye on one for quite a few years - not because Buck plays them but because I saw Bill Wyman playing one on the Steel Wheels tour.
Received it via FedEx on Wednesday, restrung it and played it out during both Lizardz gigs this past weekend. I'm totally sold...I've been playing a 5 string for the last 7 years but this bass is phenomenal. It's fast, has great tone and pretty well stays in tune the whole night. Had to re-train my brain back to playing the 4 string but well worth it. This will now be my go-to bass for gigs and recording.
If I could figure out how to post a pic, I would.

Photobucket is your friend.
What do you think of the physical design/practicality of the XM2? Years ago I played one and I didn't like the balance, no denying it has a great, consistent tone up and down the fretboard.

For the most part, I think the balance is decent. I've had a bit of an adjustment to make as I have been playing an Ernie Ball 5 string for the last several years.
It's a little lighter but I've just adjusted my right hand position a bit along with where I hold the bass in conjunction with my body - and things have been fine.
Three shows in - all is good - the tone and fretboard are top notch, especially a faster fretboard. I'm finding I can play certain runs easier than with the Ernie Ball.
