My last show in 78 was the Styx headlining show at Busch, following post OSUT at Leonard Wood (12 weeks of Basic Training, instead of 6) I had a week off, then drove to Ft. Riley, KS, with the show, on the way. I had attended a few shows with 10,000 or so in attendance, but nothing like the Busch Stadium show, which was closer to 40,000, if memory serves. I remember it being hot and an all day gig, and Styx sandbagged BÖC’s sound and lights. Try as they did, they couldn’t out perform the Cult. I remember a lot from SEE, both covers, which I love, to this day.
when I got to Ft. Riley, I made a wall poster out of two Spectres tour books, covered an entire wall, and when I went to Germany for REFORGER (war games, I was in a combat unit) some Guard Unit stayed in our barracks and stole my poster. I had to order another tour book, years later, to complete my collection.
The local radio station played SEE in its entirety, when it was released, I remember being blown away by Astronomy, from the start.
We always talk about studio albums, ranking them, etc., but I wore out many more copies of the live albums than I did the studio stuff, as far as the 70’s BÖC is concerned. I listen to live shows, today, way more than studio recordings. EB said fans could burn em, if they want, as long as they buy them, first, lol. I’ve bought my share of everything, trust me.
Sad to say I only caught 4 shows while in the Army, because the Mirrors and CE tours were by far the best, performance and sound wise, of any that I saw with the original lineup, which totaled 20. So, my totals, thus far, are 1 show in 1973, 2 in 74, 2 in 75, 6 in 76, 3 in 77, 3 in 78, 1 in 79, 2 in 80. Thank goodness for Ralph’s site, it triggered my memory. I’ll talk about the 1981 shows, in the next chapter. Sure wish we would have had access to tour schedules, back then, I would have 200 shows under my belt, instead of 150.
Mirrors had come out by the time I got back from Germany, and I spent a month on leave, really loved that record, and the tour. Finally some BŌC that more girls could stomach. It played well during cookouts, too, and back then we loved to play frisbee and football in the park and rock to some tunes.
back to the Army, by 1980 I had finally worked my way out of being a line dog (combat engineering, landmine warfare, building bridges, demolitions, etc.) to a relatively more cush job in battalion operations, with less field duty. I’ll never forget hearing The Marshall Plan on the radio, and rushing out to buy CE. In the fall of 1980, I got a 2 month gig as hometown recruiter, caught the Black and Blue tour in Kansas City and Indi. Didn’t see the Sabs, in either case. Not a fan.
