I hope this isn't a false memory, but I seem to remember that at my first BOC concert that I attended, in the late 70's, they had speakers set up at the back of auditorium as well as up front. I've never been to another concert since then that had that kind of set up. That seems like it would be a soundman's nightmare trying to control feedback. But I don't remember any issues with feedback. I think they might have used them mostly for the drum solo having the sound of the drums spinning around the auditorium. As I said, I hope this is not a false memory, (it was the 70's after all), but it could have been another band other than BOC.

During 1978, I began to notice people kept mentioning this fantastic quad system that BOC were using for gigs that really improved the sound at venues with previously known crap acoustics - the first notice I heard of it was Baltimore (3 Mar 78) and Mount Pleasant (8 Mar 78) through to Fresno (9 Aug 78) so it might have been getting used at all gigs or maybe just selected gigs (I dunno, maybe Buck can recall) through that summer... I found out what happened to it though via roadie Sam Judd when he was talking about the only night they ever got big Zilla to breathe fire ("after that it was just CO2") at the Oakland Day on the Green (2 Sep 1978): "I was mentioning to someone today that I sure wish I had those 6 Tycobrahe cabs with the built in DC300A's that we had to leave there to fit Zilla in the truck and take him back to NYC... we had been carrying those things to fly in the back as quads... FM productions (who made Zilla) was supposed to ship them to NYC, but we never saw them again..."If anyone knows when the quad system was first used, please let me know...

To duckbarman- I replied earlier but my post seems to have disappeared. The concert I saw was in Lansing, MI around 77 or 78. The band Angel, (not to be confused with the Australian band, The Angels), opened that show.. I suppose somewhere on the web is a listing of all of BOC concert dates with opening bands.

Your show was 7 Mar 1978 and so falls within the previously mentioned known "time envelope" for BOC's quad system usage:

I saw them Jan 78 in Providence Civic Center with the full blown laser show…a few months earlier. Im nearly certain (cough) the rear speakers were up there beyond the mirror ball. Rush backed them up.
Great show. It changed so many things for me over the last 45 years I couldn’t count them. Forever Grateful for the ride.
One of the greatest pleasures of my entire life started with that show…. and subsequently and very willingly being put under the lifelong spell of the Amazing Blue Oyster Cult.

Thanks for the information. Glad I’m not losing my mind. I was beginning to doubt that memory of the quad system.

I caught back to back shows, the weekend before, in Springfield and St. Louis. Among my favorite shows, for sure!
