OK, I'll admit that I have never been the best at pulling out lyrics, but there is one line in "Dancin' in the Ruins" that I hear differently from what the lyrics databases say. I've seen a couple comments on the net of other people hearing the same thing.
The databases say: "We can build a laser, tear the mesh."
I hear: "We can build a maze of tenderness."
Are we just hearing what we expect the next line would be based on our understanding of the song, or has it been performed both ways?
Trivia, I know, but has always bugged me, essentially since I really love the song.

I always thought it was "maze of tenderness" too. When I saw the "build a laser, tear the mesh" line in some online lyrics it through me for a loop.

Those lyric sites are not authoritative. It's "tenderness." A laser of tenderness. : )

A laser of tenderness. : ) Well I guess my ears aren't that shot after all - I got it half right at least, although I never came up with laser and tenderness together. Thanks for the definitive answer! I think you're right about the lyrics databases - they probably just copy each other. It's interesting we (at least me) can hear whatever we either want to hear or expect to hear in a song verse. Sometimes that can be advantageous I guess. I played that section of Dancin' about 10 times last night, each time thinking to myself ahead of time one of the, now both wrong, combination of words. Each and every time I swear I heard you sing exactly the words I had just thought about. I know this was a trivial detail that I brought up, but unfortunately sometimes I'm like a dog with a bone and can't let it go.

Joe, unless you're goofing on me, that was a joke on my part. It's "a maze of tenderness." If I put a smiley in there, I intend humor..

Don't even get me started on Perfect Water, written -vs heard. Don't tell me that! That's another one of my favorites I listen to all the time. For now I have my own interpretation, right or wrong, of what the song's lyrics are trying to convey. And I'm happy with it. The "sound" of Perfect Water is so darn appealing to me that I don't think I want to screw it up by delving into the lyrics too much deeper. I might get an interpretation I don't like! Some songs I just like the way they sound even I don't have a clue about the content or meaning. Like back when I grew up with a cheap AM radio and picking out lyrics was impossible, for me at least.

Well I should have known....now I'll have more of clue when you're trying to play me - or somebody else! But thanks for clarifying. I don't see a smiley above, so I'll assume " "It's "a maze of tenderness." " is correct. Of course there is a saying about the word assume..... "laser of tenderness" didn't make any sense anyway. But it was plausible because I know you like lasers; they ARE fun to play with. Thanks! "We won't get fooled again" "We don't get fooled again"

I'm now going to listen to my favorite BTO song 'Bakin' Carrot Biscuits' to make sure I have the lyrics right, thx for the motivation.

As for the “Perfect Water” lyrics, maybe only Jim Carroll and Buck knew/know what the exact wording is.. My absolute favorite song of all time, and of any genre..

Ha that's probably not as far off as some of the lyrics on the green computer lyric sheets you mailed away for. And I'll mention again I thought the Siege and Investiture lyric was Come In Dio not Carpe Diem because I was sure that was Dio singing that song.

I could swear at a couple points in Perfect Water there are two different lyric tracks running at the same time, with different lyrics.
Misheard lyrics aren't exactly a rare phenomenon with BOC. My brother thought the line "power underneath despair" in the chorus of the same song was actually "there's a power underneath this hair".

All four of you above, I wouldn't be surprised if you all aren't right.
Since I started this lyrics mess, here are my takeaways from my original question:
1.) The lyrics are indeed "... we can build a maze of tenderness." No lasers involved. (Buck, thanks for the final clarification. The goof around was fun actually. Keeps us on our toes!)
2.) If anybody still has a doubt, I think the following live performance makes it pretty clear:
I think this is actually one of the best live performance videos I've found of Dancin'.
