.... Since I started this lyrics mess, here are my takeaways from my original question:1.) The lyrics are indeed "... we can build a maze of tenderness." No lasers involved. (Buck, thanks for the final clarification. The goof around was fun actually. Keeps us on our toes!) 2.) If anybody still has a doubt, I think the following live performance makes it pretty clear: ...... I noticed this after I posted the video above. The extra base (woofer+some EQ tweaks) I have on my big system, the word "maze" sounds like "laze". Went back to my small computer speakers and I get "maze". My 5.1 system last night I got "maze" clearly. Points out the caution needed in deciphering lyrics from different sources with different recording equipment. Sorry about that.

Niska: Thanks for reminding me of the "old" site. I didn't find any lyrics or mention of ordering them, but I think I did before "somewhere". But I did find something totally unrelated of interest - a badge that was apparently part of an Agents of Fortune press kit: It's interesting because on my wife's Christmas list last year was a T-shirt with a large pattern of this on the front. At the last concert we attended she said a number of people came up and said they liked her t-shirt and wanted to know where she got it. They had never seen one before. I don't know where I scrounged it up on the net, maybe Amazon, and I always wondered if this was an "official" design or just something somebody made up. Now I know it was based on a REAL design. In fact she had it on tonight. Interesting to go back an look at some of the old stuff. I randomly poked around back to the 2001 site.

Don't even get me started on Perfect Water, written -vs heard. Speaking of Perfect Water. Ever since the original post I’ve looked up BOC lyrics online and come to find out I’ve been mishearing BOC lyrics for a really long, long time. That is if the lyrics online are correct. I love the song Perfect Water, but come to find out instead of the line, “and I roll (seven), seven on the floor of the sea” I’m embarrassed to say that I always thought that Buck was singing, “and I row (sailing), sailing on the Florida seas”. I guess hearing Buck singing the words “Gulf Stream” a few lines earlier made me think he was singing “Florida” since the Gulf Stream flows by there. Which makes no sense because now I’m pretty sure there is no such thing as Florida Seas. Anyways, my bad. Like I said there are so many more misheard lyrics that I’m embarrassed to admit but even so it doesn’t ruin the songs for me.

Like I said there are so many more misheard lyrics that I’m embarrassed to admit but even so it doesn’t ruin the songs for me. You're right about only assuming that the online lyrics are correct. I think we know from Dancin' that they are not 100%. The song "Drivers Seat" (I put that one on the "What are you listening to now" thread some time ago) also had an error some saying "jiving" and others saying "driving". At least with Drivers Seat some sites had it one way, others the other way, so I knew there was some issue.. For Dancin' I did not find a single site that had the correct words "maze of tenderness". THAT made me question my ears! I've found that if there is a song where I can't clearly understand the lyrics (a LOT of songs for me) my mind guesses at something that fits. So you are not alone. I hate to think how many others I have wrong too, but like you said that normally doesn't spoil the enjoyment of listening. I think the online databases are really good for songs you just can't understand at all. Likely MOST of the lyrics are correct and you at least have a good starting point of understanding.

I believe the lyrics on the BOC site came from Bolle and Melne's great lyric book that the fan club produced.

I believe the lyrics on the BOC site came from Bolle and Melne's great lyric book that the fan club produced. Thanks for re-pointing me to the "old" BOC site. I told Niska I didn't find any lyrics, but a re-look tonight I found some. Perfect Water was there, Dancin' in the Ruins was not. I forgot how much interesting stuff was out there.

Here is an example of different sites having different lyrics for Perfect Water. “Perfect Water, the dark wind braids the waves that grays birds, ware the tree. Is this our destiny?” The other, “Perfect water, the dark wind braids the waves, the crazed birds raid the trees. Is this our destiny?” To be honest I could never make out what was being sung in part of that line in between “….braids the waves” and “is this our destiny”. I guess other people couldn’t either with the two different examples that I found. The first example I have no idea what it means whereas the second example makes more sense. Even though the second example makes more sense to me I don’t know if that is the correct line. Still love the song though.

I'd vote for the second version. I listened to a live version and I hear the word "raid" and "trees" plural. But the same problem I had with Dancin', if I read either version of your lyrics, I can kinda hear that version. Still vote for the second, but I wouldn't put any money on it because there might be a third version.
There is a precedent for the phrase "crazed birds". Supposedly Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" was based on "crazed birds" that ate some form of toxic algae and attacked a town in California.
Another Buck question.

"The dark wind braids the waves, the crazed birds raid the tree. Is this our destiny?"
The second version is right. I don't know what Jim meant by the line, the waves make sense, but where are birds and trees in an ocean? Birds are weird, they're smarter than they look.

I was wondering if Jim ever gave you any insight into any message that the lyrics was trying to convey? Or.. Are they simply just cool lyrics to an incredible song?

On the subject of "I wonder what Jim Carroll was going on about....?", I've googled in the past to see if I can find any reference to Jacques Cousteau ever claiming to have heard "bells" - in random or, indeed, any order - whilst on a dive, but without success... apparently he's said to have once heard screaming whilst in an underwater cave, but nothing of a campanological nature...

Yeah, the reference in "Perfect Water" is so specific, you'd think it would be searchable. Nice wordsmithing, there duck..

OK, this started as a 1 hr time killer this afternoon and then it took on a life of its own - trying to reconcile the various versions of lyrics for Perfect Water. Below is what I came up with. HOPEFULLY it's something closer to the "real thing" than the other stuff floating around out there. Rather than discussing a specific paragraph, I just put together a "complete" version.
Color code that mostly shows up (better in my Word Document):
Red: different version of lyrics found, I used which one I heard. RED BOLD: Lyrics are drastically different across databases. I used which one I heard. word1/word2 : Two words I can't determine which one might be correct. Databases varied.
Here it is. Tear it apart - I will not be offended no matter what! ------------------------
Perfect Water
Perfect water - The dark wind braids the waves the crazed birds raid the tree. Is this our destiny? To join our hands at sea - and slowly sink - and slowly think: This is perfect water, passing over me.
Do you know Jacques Cousteau? Well it said on the radio That he hears bells in random order, deep beneath the perfect water. Lord/Love that is frightening, but still, so inviting To drown (drown) drown inside a sound, that lay so far underground And to think (and to think) and to think (and to think): This is perfect water, passing over me.
To flow inside the spiral tide To drop my eyes like a bride and ride Across the curl unmarked by borders It waits for me like an orphan daughter (a life) A life of perfect order! (a strange) The strange and perfect water! (a life) A life of perfect order! (a strange) The strange and perfect water!
Perfect water, I dream this dream beneath/within the deep and warm gulf stream <- Club Ninja different from Long Days Night? Where two blocks of ice, melt into my hands like dice And I roll (seven) seven on the floor of the sea (seven) And I roll (seven) seven on the floor of the sea (seven) And I feel the perfect water, passing/washing over me <- CN diff from LDN?
To flow inside the spiral tide To drop my eyes like a bride and ride Across the curl/curve unmarked by borders It waits for me like an orphan daughter (a life) A life of perfect order! (the strange) The strange and perfect water! (a life) A life of perfect order! (the strange) The strange and perfect water! A life, a/the strange A life, a/the strange
