With the exception of his two Les Paul's and the white SG, I thought I had seen every guitar in Buck's Arsenal live. However I recently came across a picture of him playing a double neck Steinberger that looks like maybe it was taken mid-90s. I'm scratching my head trying to think of what song he would use this on and the only one I can come up with is deadline. I've never personally heard them play that live. Can anyone shed any light?

I still have that guitar, a 6+12 string double neck. Black with white binding. It weighs a ton, with a maple body. Don't play it much, I'd only use the 12 anyway. I don't play any songs that require both necks. It's rare for sure. Ned Steinberger invented a nifty way to tune the 12 strings, with one large knob at the tailpiece which slides from string to string to tune all 12.

Thank you Buck! One more quick one if I may: what initially hooked you on to the Steinberger to the point you've been playing that style guitar pretty much exclusively on stage for 20 plus years?

Espo, I took that photo. It was from a The Red & the Black show from Studio One in Newark, NJ, on 03/31/90. I shared this pic and others with Bolle and Melne back in the day, and Melne reached out to me for permission to use that one (and ones of Jon and Ron) in TR&TB booklet released as part of Buck’s “BD Archive” series. Despite what it says in the booklet, the photos were NOT taken at The Red Zone showcase two weeks later, as I could not make that show.
Buck, if memory serves, you used the double neck on “Reaper” during that run of TR&TB shows (of which I saw three). Does that sound right?

That’s the one. I’ve got an 8 x 10” of it on my office wall, signed by BD.

Warrior, that is very cool. I never heard of these shows until they were over...bummer.

I stand corrected. BD didn’t use it on “Reaper”; I think the SG was used on that track live. Perhaps it was “Buck’s Boogie”?

the photos were NOT taken at The Red Zone showcase two weeks later Just checking - the only Red Zone show I know of was just 4 days later - were there two gigs there? Here are the ones I know about - if anybody knows of any others I'm missing, please let me know: 10 Mar 1990: Rongovian Embassy, Trumansburg NY [Billed as "Dharma, Riddle & Rogers] 16 Mar 1990: Stone Pony, Asbury Park NJ 31 Mar 1990: Studio One, Newark NJ 01 Apr 1990: Coleman's, Rome NY [w/DC Strut] 04 Apr 1990: The Red Zone, New York City NY [Record Company Showcase] 11 Apr 1990: East Coast Music Mall, Danbury CT [w/Leslie West, Reeves Gabriel; Benefit Show] 14 Apr 1990: Stone Pony, Asbury Park NJ [w/Good Rats, KISS, JL Turner etc; Benefit Show] 16 Jun 1990: Rongovian Embassy, Trumansburg NY There's a 2 month gap between the 2nd Stone Pony gig and that 2nd Rongo gig, so either something was happening or I'm missing some tR&tB gigs. BTW: BOC didn't play between mid-Feb and the end of June 1990, so it looks like maybe they were hanging on to see what was happening with Buck's band before making a decision to carry on or not...? Dunno, but it's a somewhat mysterious interlude...

My dates were off. I saw the two Stone Pony shows, as well as the Studio One gig. The Red Zone show was indeed 04/04, not 04/14 (when I initially typed, it I thought I was off, since I remember The Red Zone gig being midweek and I couldn’t make it). So your dates are correct. Ralph.

Ralph. OK, cheers for that - I'm pretty sure I'm still missing some dates though... - it's an interesting period for sure, with Buck starting a new band and EB seemingly turning away from music and hooking up with Jerry Rubin to sell "health" drinks... it was like BOC had died for a second time, but whereas what kickstarted them that time back in 1987 was a nice set of summer European dates, I could never quite put my finger on what was the defining factor that prompted them to get back on the palomino this time... I sort of thought that maybe the reason we still (currently) have BOC playing today was down to tR&tB's failure to get a record deal back then...?

A boot video of the 04/11/90 show at East Coast Music has circulated, and Ace Frehley showed up and played with the fellas that day.
I know of no other dates.

Since we're talking guitars, does anybody know how the cheeseburger got "damaged"? I'm talking about the little mouse-munch on the bottom tip, which kind of gives it character at this point. And you can't even see it a lot of the time. I'm sure it's been posted somewhere I've never stumbled upon.
No matter how little the damage, I'm sure Buck was NOT pleased.

The damage that looks like a puppy gnawed on the corner of the guitar happened as a result of flying the guitar in its original BOC flight case, a heavy hard sided ATA road case typical of band gear used by everyone. In this instance, the foam cutout inner layer was too thin close to the rim of the case, and over time the guitar was damaged by rivets on the inside of the case impacting the horn of the guitar body.
This year I restored much of the Cheeseberger, new electronics, frets and mechanical parts. I could have fixed the body, but decided not to, letting it remain with the 30 odd years of wear it carries.
These days, our guitars fly in gig bags inside of corrugated plastic cases by Case Extreme. They look flimsy, but they're not. They will bend a little but do not crush. They are much better at absorbing shock than heavy flight cases. To date we've never had any damage from careless handling by airlines or gig loaders, and we've used them for a couple decades now.

Buck, Thanks for the detailed info! Your description was good. Now I can visualize what happened - easy after the damage happened. Probably not obvious to anticipate before it happened. Glad you found some good cases that are working out. The baggage handlers can be really rough on things. Probably a wise move not to worry about repairing the cosmetics. How many people in the audience really care about, or even notice, the "gnaw" marks anyway? The first time I even noticed it at all was in the Rock of Ages "Harvest Moon" video.
At work sometimes we just had to not worry about cost to take something with us. One "thing" a friend of mine had to travel with a couple of times he had to buy two airplane seats: one for him and one for the thing. I think the airline had some method of helping him strap it in. And then there were the approval letters to get it through TSA, the airline, and customs. Better him than me.
