Concerning earplugs, right now I'm using just the off the shelf ones that are like stacked flying saucers, honeycomb shaped. These are the ones you get at home improvement stores for chainsaws, jackhammers, etc. I've also used the foam drug store ones, which work about the same on me. Rated at 26 dB attenuation to some ANSI spec which is more than sufficient, actually too much. And my ears are not linear, at my age the high end starts dropping at about 8 kHz in one ear, 6 kHz in the other. Below that I'm considered in the no hearing loss range.
The problem is that the attenuation from the plugs doesn't seem to be linear over the frequency range of music. And the only way to adjust the attenuation is to pull one (or both) out part way. Not real predictable. So nothing sounds as good as it COULD be.
I finally searched the net for some that are 1) adjustable attenuation and 2) linear frequency response over the normal range of music. There are dozens to choose from having one or both CLAIMED characteristics. Some are called "musicians" plugs (or something similar). The prices range from not too bad to out of my budget for the amount of use they'll get. I can't just go buy plug after plug and try to test at home, which I could with my sound system and sound level meter. For concert use they would not have to be suitable for impulse noise, like gunfire, jackhammers, etc.
Concert coming up soon so I would like to make the best of it! So do any of you have any experience, thoughts, recommendations, or ones/types that you really like at some reasonable price?
