I think Eric is libertarian on Pot legality and incarceration, but he doesn't use it himself, for a long time now. He bristles at vaping for some reason. I think it's a lot safer for everyone than burning tobacco. I think the official anti-vape stance is to discourage kids from getting hooked on anything.
I few singers are virulently anti-smoke at venues. Smoke is rare now, and it's only pot, not enough to actually matter IMO. One of the casinos we played recently allowed smoking, and the smell was jarring after so many years of smoke free rooms. I still remember the old days when everybody smoked. Ash trays everywhere, cars, planes, trains, homes. Youngsters have never known that. Tobacco smoking's effect on your health is undeniable. You're gonna want those lungs when you get older.

While Daltry abhors any kind smoke, Mellencamp likes the way smoking affects his voice. Both great singers IMO. I haven't had a puff/sniff of any rec drug in 25 years. My friends still smoke pot regularly while I'm happy to just sip a beer. Do still love the smell of it tho! Now cigs on the other hand...ugh...I can't seem to ever successfully quit them.

Everybody's different. Tobacco smoke, even a very small amount, gets to me fast - and I try to get away fast. Wood (fireplace, BBQ) smoke has no real effect unless I stay in a cloud of it for awhile. In fact I'm drawn to it in small amounts. No clue if I'm allergic to pot smoke, no desire to find out. The only real exposure I've ever had is when I would be at a drive-in movie theater and some car near me lit up. And then the smoke was transient and blew away as fast as it appeared. Different smokes affect different folks.

Lanier always seen on stage with a cig dangling from his lips.An all time fave of mine Dave Swarbrick from Fairport smoked incessantly and lost a lung and died fairly young.Personally I've hated cigs my mom died from lung cancer and she literally chain smoked herself to death.I smoked pot but not to overkill.I did enjoy using an apple as my pipe the taste was sweet .

"Your're gonna want those lungs when you get older." That would be a great line for the anti-smoking/vaping campaign!!!

As a pot smoker, I try to be considerate to others around. With that said, it has been part of the scene forever, and doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. Let me add...as a MA resident where marijuana is legal, I'm in my 6th grow season.....never thought I would see the day where I can grow it in my garden legally....but it's a beautiful thing.

I would grow, being in Cali, but I'm much better off doing what I do well in exchange for a medium of exchange I can exchange for well-grown bud.

In his/their defense Daltrey at the time had major throat issues being treated and was hyper sensitive to smoke and warned not to be around any smoke.
His fear of the major throat issue he was having definitely caused them to go a bit overboard IMO….but I get it. It’s his instrument.
Just a bit of context. Roger without a singing voice for a stretch wasn’t a good thing. It has improved from where he was at for a while when he really struggled.

I was at that Casino. At least I remember the Buffalo Casino Miami OK one.. I’m not a smoker and never been. After the show chatting in the casino, ya, our eyes were burnin’ and ohh that smell, ya jarring! The concert that night tho..It was Awesome!! Once again BÖC never fails!!

I went to see Little Village, the short-lived group of Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner, at the Hammersmith Odeon in the early 90s. First gig I can remember where smoking was banned in the auditorium at the band's request. Not a smoker myself but at the time I think most people thought it was a bit precious to be honest. Now seems weird that we didn't mind coming home from the pub or gigs with our clothes reeking of ciggie smoke

Roger without a singing voice for a stretch wasn’t a good thing. It has improved from where he was at for a while when he really struggled. I'm certainly no Daltrey expert, but apparently he has had throat issues since at least 2009. From everything I've read I have to give him the benefit of the doubt regarding his allergy claims. And you're right, his voice IS his instrument and it can't be replaced like a guitar, keyboard, or drum set. These three articles can explain part of it a whole lot better than I can, but you have to really read all three, at least I did, to put all the pieces together: www.celebretainment.com/celebrities/roger-daltrey-im-allergic-to-the-smell-of-weed/article_bc1b96c8-5a14-5b99-b95b-e63b98dd724f.htmlwww.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2019/12/06/who-roger-daltrey-fine-after-throat-procedure-talks-cincinnati-concert-healing/4357039002/yourvoiceisyourlife.com/the-who-roger-daltry-opens-up-about-medical-procedure-that-saved-his-voice/I wonder how many other lead vocalists have similar or equivalent issues that we don't even know about? I don't know what all rules a band can demand at a venue, but I think there better ways than a rant at the END of a show. There are such things as no smoking ordinances (yes, I would consider pot smoke as smoke), signs on entrances, an announcement BEFORE the show, and security personal to deal with things if necessary. Many security personnel are seen as a joke by a lot audiences with no real authority to do much. BUT, a full commissioned law enforcement officer instead can do a LOT. Of course you have to be careful that you don't make things worse. Balancing act, risk vs reward, and all that stuff.
