First cut I heard was DFTR. Did I get convinced? You bet! Second cut was This Ain’t the Summer of Love (bought AOF after hearing DFTR and started playing it right away. Was I further convinced? Oh I was HOOKED. Then I got FOUO and then Secret Treaties. None of the three sounded like each other which made me just want to hear more and more and more. I had to listen to every BOC record several times before I really liked it, except Club Ninja, which I loved from first listen. As for BOC, in general, I was convinced upon listening to Bucks Boogie, in 1973, the first time, but had been listening to the first record for a year without really knowing who they were. Once I knew they were THAT band (the one from Guitars That Destroyed The World) we ran out and bought Tyranny and Mutation, but it took a few listens to put it on the same level as Bucks Boogie. As for Treaties, I’m somewhere in the middle. I disagree with that review, but I don’t place it as the Everest of the canon. Maybe Denali. Did you know Denali is nearly 6000 feet taller than Everest, measuring just the peaks? MartMan, Denali is the largest mountain measuring from base to peak. Everest is steeper, Denali is Wider. I flew from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay regularly and it took 25 minutes to fly by McKinley in a 757. Take that flight at 10:30 in the morning and you will see the Sun Rise and Set at the same time (Daylight is 6 hours in Anchorage and no daylight in Prudhoe Bay). By the time you are flying by Fairbanks, it's pitch dark and not even 12 noon yet. Get an "A" seat on the flight to Prudhoe and an "F" seat back to Anchorage. The Denali Show never disappointed.

I was just a pimple faced fledgling teen when my freind brought the brand new (then) BÖC first album to my house. Cities blew me totally away. At the time I was huge on Black Sabbath but when I heard the BÖC album I knew everything else was second rate. Growing up lower New York helped cement my love and connection as you guys fit in so well with the scene. I've read the earlier comments but to be honest I can't relate to not being a öyster boy from day 1. I'm glad ya'll made it though. OYFOOYK FOREVER

Like a lot of people here my first introduction was Reaper also. It was when it first came out as a single on the radio which meant no mid-section solo. My brother went and saw them live and came home with on your feet on 8 track. I would hear him blasting it in his bedroom and last days of May absolutely hooked me. I've never heard anything so hauntingly beautiful and I think I still haven't. I have the entire boc catalog and a couple of pretty cool bootlegs and on your feet will always be my fave. I don't even remember the shorter non-solo version, but I must have heard it since it looks like the full version single wasn't released until 1978 and I know I heard DFTR before 78. Looks like the Agents of Fortune album, with the full length track, was released in 1976, the same year as the original no-solo single. The lyrics/riff part is what grabbed me and was the part I focused on, so I probably just forgot about the non-solo version. I don't know if radio stations were allowed to play the album version or not back then. That was a LONG time ago and an extremely busy time for me with a lot of change going on. I may get flamed for this, but I really didn't fully appreciate long'ish guitar solos (any song by any group) until I saw a video of Buck playing DFTR live. One viewing completely changed my opinion. Now DFTR would be totally incomplete without the solo. Funny how the human mind works. Totally agree with you on LDOM. Another tune with a very unique sound. My wife found it first, said to me "bet you'll like this one". Yep, hooked the first or second listen. I love both versions, the original "haunting" album release and the longer performance version. To me each has it's totally unique place in their arsenal. Since this started as a Secret Treaties discussion, my favorite tracks from it so far are "Dominance and Submission", "Harvester of Eyes", "Astronomy", and I'm working on "ME 262". So that's exactly 1/2 the album, which is pretty good for me for any band. Some of the others I probably like, but some I haven't yet fully associated some titles with the songs. Like most BÖC songs once I figure out what they're generally about my appreciation level goes way up.

The Reaper 'single' version was an edit of the album track done once the song began to take off first at album radio then crossing over to top 40. The two existed at the same time, there was no real dominance of one over the other. Depended on what station it appeared on.
When we appeared on the Merv Griffin show, we lip-synced the song and they played the single edit version which we were unprepared for, since we'd never performed that version live. We will never win any awards for lip-syncing.

Yeah. The Subhuman live....I immediately picked up my Ibanez Destroyer and spent every spare second I had learning that song. It's still badass. It always will be badass. I played it for some of my bandmates and they were dumbfounded. Truly a WTF? moment for them.

Ha-I watched that live.Never even knew there was a single with the break edited out.You guys were totally discombobulated trying to stay with the pace of the studio version anyway but I loved it regardless.Griffin mentioning Joan Crawford Merv saying hopefully you guys can come back and do it and Allen going "joan will be back too" was a ok by me.Still trying to figure "all the energy backstage" was that BOC or Burt and Carole.Oh to be a fly on the wall in the green room.Nyuk nyuk.

I got ETL from a Columbia 8 for a penny deal. My favorite album of all time. My brother bought RBN, which neither of us cared for much. I found an older album (you had to find albums in those days) with a song I knew from ETL. I don't remember which album it was, but I remember thinking the studio versions didn't hold a candle to the live versions. Never tried another album again. But over the years I've bought ETL 4 times.
I saw the band in Weatherford TX on the 4th of July 2021, and since then I've listened to everything.
Long time coming

For me personally I've always felt whatever version, live or Studio, that grabs my attention first is my most preferred. While there are exceptions I think it pretty much holds true.

Amusingly, his take on "Secret Treaties" is, it's weaker than the first two records. He compares his impression of BOC with the hype on the band. I never thought the hype accurately described what we were, much less what we've become today. I think you'd have to give BOC a decent listen to understand why you might like us. Did any of you get convinced on the first cut you heard? I heard Cities On Flame on the radio when I was 12. I remember how distinct it sounded. But I didn't go Full BOC until On Your Feet came out. I wish I could go back to watch that germination. I do remember once I acquired the Black & White albums, I seldom listened to OYFOOYK. Luckily, OYFOOYK Gatefold doubled as a Cleaning Tool :-) I was just the opposite, I was burned out on the first 3, so OYF came out, just in time. I wore out 4 copies, one per year. Agents and Spectres renewed my interest in studio records, but SEE took over, just like OYF. I think it’s because I’m just an outro solo guy, at heart.

Did any of you get convinced on the first cut you heard? First time I heard BOC was Astronomy in '74 on WPLJ and I immediately thought "Gotta get this" and so I did.I was just starting to get into hard rock/progressive rock I had always liked the psychedelic stuff I heard on the radio early on probably the Yardbirds(and maybe Psychotic Reaction by The Count Five) brought me into that mode. Then there was a small group of friends who I'd get high with who were listening to a much different bunch of records(Spooky Tooth,Savoy Brown, etc) than my friends were and my friend Guy told me he had the first two records so I borrowed those and lent him ST and that got me started. There was never any question about liking the material it just grew on me as I listened.I almost saw my first BOC show at the Academy Of Music in Oct '74 but instead I went up to Syracuse U with a frend to hang with his cousin who was a student there. As we're walking up the hill some guy hanging on his porch was listening to the first record so that took the edge off over not seeing BOC that night altho a 31-0 loss by 'Cuse to Maryland didn't help LOL.

A ticket was offered to me, but never heard of the band, or knew any music, so my first listening session was seeing the band live. With that said, it was love at first sight.
