I had to listen to every BOC record several times before I really liked it, except Club Ninja, which I loved from first listen. As for BOC, in general, I was convinced upon listening to Bucks Boogie, in 1973, the first time, but had been listening to the first record for a year without really knowing who they were. Once I knew they were THAT band (the one from Guitars That Destroyed The World) we ran out and bought Tyranny and Mutation, but it took a few listens to put it on the same level as Bucks Boogie. As for Treaties, I’m somewhere in the middle. I disagree with that review, but I don’t place it as the Everest of the canon. Maybe Denali. Did you know Denali is nearly 6000 feet taller than Everest, measuring just the peaks? MartMan, Denali is the largest mountain measuring from base to peak. Everest is steeper, Denali is Wider. I flew from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay regularly and it took 25 minutes to fly by McKinley in a 757. Take that flight at 10:30 in the morning and you will see the Sun Rise and Set at the same time (Daylight is 6 hours in Anchorage and no daylight in Prudhoe Bay). By the time you are flying by Fairbanks, it's pitch dark and not even 12 noon yet. Get an "A" seat on the flight to Prudhoe and an "F" seat back to Anchorage. The Denali Show never disappointed. To further clarify this point, Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world, measured from sea level. It is 29,000 ft about sea level. From sea level, Denali is "only" 20,000 feet tall. So measuring absolute altitude of the peak, Everest is the tallest. But Denali, measured from base to summit is a taller mountain than Everest. The base of Denali is at 2,000 ft, and the summit at 20,000. So overall, it is an 18,000 foot tall mountain. Everest's base is at 17,000 ft. It's summit is 29,000 ft. So it's a 12,000 foot tall mountain. It just starts at a much higher elevation. And to throw another loop into things, the Mauna Kea volcano in Hawaii has a height of 33,500 ft from base to peak. So it's taller than both Everest and Denali. It's just that half of it's height is underwater. Now back to more important things, like whether Astronomy is BOC's single greatest tune.

Amusingly, his take on "Secret Treaties" is, it's weaker than the first two records. He compares his impression of BOC with the hype on the band. I never thought the hype accurately described what we were, much less what we've become today. I think you'd have to give BOC a decent listen to understand why you might like us. Did any of you get convinced on the first cut you heard? I was in a seminary when I heard Agents of Fortune and yes I was hooked from the first listen.

It always struck me as a big shame those two weren't on OYF... obviously, it was only relatively recently that I heard about Sandy's original plans for OYF were for it to have been a triple record release, and that those 2 tracks were scheduled to be on it, but that they didn't make the cut when it got cut down to a double... if I'm honest, and as much as I enjoy the two covers at the end of that record, I'd have deffo made that particular substitution... #sacrilege_or_what

I have an EP that includes a long killer live version of telepaths that sounds like it's from that era. I'll have to pull it out of the big box in the closet to see if there's any more info such as recorded dates.

A little off topic - maybe ?: Martin Popoff Nov 12, 2022 Top 20 weirdest Blue Öyster Cult songs "Blue Öyster Cult's weirdest? Well, we'll define it with what’s uncharacteristic for BÖC (often way too poppy), what’s obscure and just didn’t connect, what’s got a defining characteristic or two that is off the band’s chart, and then really, when you get to the earlier songs at the top of the list, what’s just objectively weird."www.goldminemag.com/music-history/top-20-weirdest-blue-%C3%B6yster-cult-songs(list of Martin's picks plus comments on each)
