Have started rewatching NYPD BLUE. Some of the material would get it “cancelled” today. Funny to see David Shwimmer play a meak lawyer who shoots a robber. You can see a little of the future Ross Geller in that portrayal but not an inkling that he would one day play the harsh Captain Sobel. Cancelled - yea, no joke! Same thing with a number of other shows and movies already discussed here. Probably all the good ones would be chopped. I'm not even sure Dragnet or Adam-12 would survive. Probably some would need even the title changed.

I saw an episode of The Jeffersons on AntennaTV earlier this week, and I couldn't believe it when George Jefferson called Helen Willis the n-word not just once, but twice. It wasn't bleeped out or anything.

I caught the beginning of Blazing Saddles on IFC the other night while flipping around and immediately thought it would be edited to the extreme. Much to my surprise it was uncut!

I've never been a fan of censoring stuff like this - for me, it's important to view things in the contemporaneous context of the time... By all means, give a warning prior to broadcast that the following programme/film contains material likely to offend but also state that the prevailing social mores of the time meant that these attitudes were considered acceptable back in the day... Blazing Saddles is a great, ground-breaking example... back in 1974, we all laughed, whilst wincing, of course, at the attitudes and language expressed therein - but it served to shine a fierce light on the endemic, societal racism of the time... The fact that, for many, the attitudes and language are now so uncomfortable to hear should be a sign of the progression we've made, but sadly, there are signs that this progression now currently seems to be going backwards... white supremacy, general racism, transphobia and anti-semiticism are now all all too frequently being openly expressed and seem to have become almost normalized in political debate... One of the main points of studying history is to learn from your mistakes... a lot of current law-makers don't seem to have got that memo... :-(

I think it's because I don't have the attention span to watch a TV screen or a movie screen for several hours at a time. It just seems too passive for me.

Blazing Saddles trivia.
What line in BS is also prominent in an earlier classic film?

You need a much larger television and a surround sound system with at least a couple hundred watts. Crank it up and it will grab your attention! :) Some movies just can't be helped though no matter what. (I'm mostly just kidding around with you, but I do get bored much faster with our secondary little TV in another room with tiny built in speakers)

Just an FYI:
John Wick: Chapter 4 is out at theaters. I haven't seen it. Highly rated and so far a big box office success. 2h 49min
It looks like Lance Reddick made it into the movie before his untimely death. RIP

The speakers in it sound tinny, so I hooked it up to the Sony bookshelf speakers that I used to use with my old stereo system. That gives it a really full sound. I listen to the TV more than I actually sit and watch it.

I listen to the TV more than I actually sit and watch it. Tinny is a good word. That's like our little TV. Actually our big TV without the amp is not great either, but ok for watching the news or something. I need to do something similar to what you did for the little one. I can't remember what kind of output connector(s) it has. My desktop computer has tiny speakers in the monitor. OK for dings and whistles, but horrible on music. So I remembered my previous two computers had external speakers. So I grabbed a set and hooked up to an extra stereo out jack. The speakers I found actually have a decent amp built in PLUS an amplified small subwoofer. Now music sounds great! The second extra set I have is similar but with larger speakers and a larger subwoofer. So if I can ever get the chance to dig everything out, those will go to the little TV. YouTube on a smart TV with external speakers can be addictive. LOTS of BOC live performances to choose from !!!
