Most of my interaction with ChatGPT have been attempts at deeper questions of the nature of AI with regard to it being analogous to biblical creation (god/man -vs- man/AI) maybe some discussion of parallels within literature/pop culture and potential for negative outcomes eg. Frankenstein or Godzilla. I seem to catch it in different moods (if that's actually a thing with it). Some days it seems fairly light-hearted, other days it's terse and demanding, seeming to want a strict input/output type of discussion. Or maybe it's my own mood on those days that affects my opinion, IDK.

Ha. I've messed with ChatGPT a little to generate lyrics. So far, it spits out what an uninvolved observer might think of the artist's content asked for. A bunch of key word phrases that don't mean much other than check the vocabulary boxes and themes of the target lyric. I might look for some inspiration based on AI's text generation, maybe I'd get lucky. Most lyrics of the heavy metal genre alleged of BOC are pretty crappy in my opinion. I think AI will be useful in generating a lot of what used to take people to make, pro forma language and rote prose for most mundane application. I imagine it'll see use for children's programming and all kinds of day to day blather in all fields of communication. I could see all of network TV being done by AI. "The View" for instance, could be replaced by AI given the predictable nature of the commentary there. Insert ANY other TV program and it's likely to have the same outcome there as well. Gonna put a lot of white collar and artsy people out of work, I think. So Buck, Are you admitting you actually watch "The View"? :) |

I figured I'd kill an hour or two fooling with ChatGPT, but it wouldn't let me register without my phone number. No thanks. Since I've retired I no longer have my "special" phone number at work to use.
How long would it take for my phone number to show up in somebody's generated content?
I wonder if their privacy policy was written by ChatGPT itself?

Hmm...don't really think Chatgpt is capable of writing high quality lyrics just yet. What I've seen so far is more like just trying to copy a style without really understanding the underlying meaning. It's missing the nuance, the subtle metaphors and allegory often found in human content. I think that's mostly because while it's very "smart" it's still purely an algorithm mining an impressive database of knowledge. What it's missing is human intelligence....human feeling, mischief, love, hate...all the emotions that make us what we are...Human. I think until it wakes up one day and develops all that (which it might once it's allowed sensory input beyond the language model), it will at best be a tool to be used by artists....but won't be able to really replace them (at least the great ones). I agree with Buck though that it will probably put a lot of artist types (mundane stuff), administrative types, even teachers out of a job sooner than we think. And, I will say the smarter it gets the more I agree with those who said "it creeps me out".... The thing that creeps me out more than the AI itself, no matter how "smart" it gets, is how actual PEOPLE will use it and what they do with the "output". For things like johnnystorm (the original poster) used as an example, I think it would be a real hoot to tinker with. I was going to try it to have it write some lyrics of a song that combined DFTR and Amazing Grace, the two songs popular for eulogies. No telling what would get spit out! Without picking on ChatGPT itself (Microsoft has some similar version), do a Google/Bing/Duckduckgo/DogPile, whatever, search on it across the news and tech magazine sites and look at the predictions, criticism, controversy, bias discussions. Your creep index should go up. Just waiting for some fool idiot clown to generate some CLASSIFIED document with it. Would it be able to correctly re-classify it? Just saying....... |

But I don't think it would have helped me much in calculus, thermodynamics, physics, and electronics. Not much text involved. BUT, maybe some of those sociology, history, and liberal arts things! Those are the ones I didn't like doing. |

Are those ChatGPT lyrics copyrighted? Who is ChatGPT and when do they begin lawsuits for copyright infringement? This is ultimately what prevents people from using it. There will always be a record of it's output. Use at your own risk! |

AI companies MAYBE could protect themselves somewhat by stating that the output of their software is ONLY to be used according the "fair use" doctrine defined in the US Code of Federal Regulations (see below) and likely other things I don't even know about. I'm not a copyright attorney but have had to touch on some of the provisions back in a previous job. All these regulations have a ton of case law that clarifies particular cases. And then other countries have their own restrictions. So the usually cited fair use law below is kinda out of context with other provisions. Good luck! 17 USC § 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use
Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. Meh. Some of those chatcrap AI lyrics remind me of Judas Priest, not BOC. As for lyric writing, AI can't compete with THC and LSD.

Well not lyrics but I remember reading this article (https://bravewords.com/reviews/blue-oyster-cult-the-symbol-remains) a few years ago and thinking "damn did a human even write this?". I finally resolved it was some production copywriter who needed to generate some content just borrowing liberally every BOC cliche from other articles he could google on the subject. Anyway I found the article again and sure enough my impression remains the same. I think this is what you might get from Chatgpt if asked to write that article. Half truths, half crap, half interesting, half unintelligible blather....oh wait... that's most articles nowadays...😁

Oh wait… did you know in the early days of the Third Reich Germany had Television Cafes? Think Internet Cafe. Watch this wonderful new technology called “television”.
