I dig Queens Blvd-very Kinks sounding.I'm guessing Gil Blanco County is a good bet-thought it was fantastic at both the Acoustic and 40th shows. Let me reiterate what everyone else has said about this tribute to Allen. As Sammy would say "It's a beautiful thing man"

Question about one of the SWU later SFG tunes.I really got into Bonomo's Turkish Taffy-the neatest thing and IMO one of the neatest things you guys have ever committed to vinyl is the Who harmony thingy after the guitar break.Owing more to Who Sell Out/A Quick One than later BOC Who-like efforts(Fallen Angel/Celestial,etc)what exactly is being said?

what exactly is being said? I've strained my ears a few times for that one - "somewhere" something or other, but I can't quite get it... Out of the SWU tunes we've been fortunate to get to hear, "Bonomo" is possibly the one least suited to Les's style - maybe "Arthur Comics" too - though I must admit, I've since got more accustomed to Les's delivery on that - it sort of works, like a counterpoint type of thing... I got to see an SWU setlist the other day and saw that "Bonomo" was actually a set opener... if you're interested, the setlist went thusly: Set 1: Bonomo's Turkish Taffy Bark In The Sun Queen's Boulevard Donovan's Monkey Arthur Comics Sitting on The Buddha's Knee Set 2: Mystic Stump Patron of the Arts Bonomo's Turkish Taffy Mothra John L. Sullivan Arthur Comics Rational Passional What I find of interest in the above setlist is the presence of songs which I had previously thought only came in with the introduction of EB, namely "John L. Sullivan" and "Donovan's Monkey". I'd love to have heard how Les handled those... Other point of interest is "Mystic Stump" AND "Bark In The Sun" - both reputedly precursors to "Cagey" - we've heard "Bark" and know it supplied the main "Cagey" riff/chorus, so did "Mystic Stump" provide the verse...? And as for "Patron of the Arts"? Your guess is as good as mine on that one...

Bonomo's is IMO much better on St Cecilia.I don't even bother with the SWU version.Certainly Les's vocal on Bonomo and Arthurs Comics is completely unacceptable for a release. There's no doubt they would have had to improve by leaps in order to make the cut.

Didn't Allen write Please Hold? I always assumed that too - but when you look, it has Albert as the sole credit...

Bonomo's is IMO much better on St Cecilia. Oh, you can't even compare them really... I'm a big fan of Les's vocals, but even his mum would have said "Les - step away from the mike - let Buck do that one..." > Certainly Les's vocal on Bonomo and Arthurs Comics is completely unacceptable for a release.
I'm less sure with Arthur Comics - certainly, the SFG version is the best one and it's the one you'd go with - but I've been playing the SWU songs a lot and despite hating it at first (I thought it just didn't work at all), lately, I've got to rather like it - it's so wrong, that maybe it's nearly right... SWU Bonomo, though, is so wrong, it's just plain wrong full stop. Les just doesn't compromise - it's his speed or nothing - that's why it'd be interesting to hear his take on John L Sullivan and Donovan's... BTW: The SWU track with by far the largest number of views on youtube is "Buddha's Knee"... a fair way back in 2nd place is "Queens Boulevard"...

It's his pseudo-British take on that I don't care for.I think it works well with Queens Blvd.Les's Bonomos and Arthur Comics takes don't do it for me.

Didn't Allen write Please Hold? It's been nagging at me that it has Albert credited as the sole writer on the Spectres Expanded Edition - I mean, it just doesn't sound like his sort of thing - and in my mind, I always had it pegged as an Allen song anyway, which is why I was surprised when I saw it supposedly wasn't - anyway, I've just looked on the Wiki page for the album and, on there, it says Allen did write it... I don't normally source my info from wikipedia, but in this case, it just feels righter (unlike my grammar)...

Didn't Allen write Please Hold? Allen did. That must be a mistake to credit Albert for that one.

Wasn't planning on making this one, but when the news broke that it was going to be a tribute to Allen, I had to go. I saw Blue Coupe shortly after Allen passed, and they did a nice rendition of Dance the Night Away.....would be nice to hear it with the whole BOC group. See you there Buck!
Regards, Mike
