I've been putting off my concert reviews since March for awhile, so I thought I'd make a post about the concerts I went to back in April of this year. It was also an interesting month, which why I dub it Pink Floyd Month.
ECHOES OF POMPEII (APRIL 2ND, ARCADA THEATRE)
To kick the month off, I saw Echoes of Pompeii again, who were doing a laser show spectacular. Got some really nice seats in front row on the balcony floor. ^_^ Here's an interesting fact about the band too: They're also sometimes perform as a blues-rock band called Funny Man, which I didn't know until that night, because the opening act didn't show up, so they opened up for themselves.
It was a two-set concert, and again, like I said, it's a laser show. They would have laser animations playing from a screen, while also including in some pretty exciting lighting. Sometimes, however, the lighting did hurt my eyes, and I wished I had brought my sunglasses with me. >_<
As for the covers themselves and the setlist, I thought they did great. Personally, I didn't find it as good as when I had saw them earlier back in January since the one they did long ago was a kick-ass jam with some interesting selections, but I still thought they did great.
After the concert, I got to meet their first-aid saxophonist, as well as get my picture taken with the three backing vocal ladies. ;D
DAVID GILMOUR (APRIL 6TH, CHICAGO AUDITORIUM THEATRE)
When I first heard that David Gilmour was going to a North American tour, I got really excited, because I had never seen him live before, and I didn't want to miss out. Upon arriving in the theatre, I really loved the interior design, particularly the beautiful arch paintings and the beautiful arch lighting. ^_^
Oh yeah, and 15 minutes before the concert, there would be some Pink Floyd ambient sound playing, which got everybody excited. David Gilmour's performance was spectacular as well. My personal favorites were 'Rattle That Lock', 'A Boat Lies Waiting', 'The Blue', and 'The Girl in the Yellow Dress'.
My first issue though came up during Rattle That Lock, which was the same problem I had a little bit with the Echoes of Pompeii show: The lighting. What made it worse though was that the irritation was more frequent. The theatre wasn't as big as a venue like the United Center, so a concert like this with such lighting didn't seem to fit in the venue that was smaller like the Auditorium.
Another big issue, although not on the performance itself, was some of the audience members. Some guys who were on the same balcony as me and my parents were almost constantly changing seats. What also pissed me off about them was that they were on their phones most of the night, not even paying attention to the concert, so what's the damn point? Sometimes, they would also chat with the guy who was originally sitting there while standing and blocking the view at the same time. My dad was really fed up, and although he tried to be polite during 'A Boat Lies Waiting' by asking them kindly to move so they wouldn't block view, they brushed him off and kept doing what they were doing. I'm usually the kind of person who didn't want to get into fights with other concertgoers, but was so pissed at them for how rude they were being, I just lost it, and yelled at them, "Shut the fuck up!" Finally, the two guys who were standing left to go back to their seats.
The guy who was sitting gave me a dirty look, and after some bickering, he fucked off and left us alone. However, the whole seat-changing between the guys and the standing around kept going during the 2nd set, as the same douchebags came back to block the view. Other people who were behind us were also starting to ask them to stop blocking the view. Then during 'Comfortably Numb', some lady who was sitting next to my dad who was also annoyed by those guys cracked up so hard when my dad photobombed by giving the double bird behind that asshole while he took a selfie with his friends and, again, was getting in the way of the view.
I normally try to not let guys like those people not ruin the fun, but this shit was literally happening most of the night, I felt like the fun was killed, thanks to them.
As for the second concert?
DAVID GILMOUR (APRIL 8TH, UNITED CENTER)
This was a lot better than the previous night. First, me and my parents weren't sitting behind any assholes like last time, because we had front row balcony seats, so all of us could watch without any rude distractions. Second, since this is a bigger venue, the lighting only hurt a few times, but overall, mostly did not affect any of us at all. David Gilmour was still able to give his best like last time. I don't have much to say here, but it this was no doubt the best night out of the two shows, pretty much.
Sorry I don't have any photos from that night.
It was overall an exciting month for me. Got to see Echoes of Pompeii again, got to see David Gilmour for the first, and for a second time in the same week!
And here's a fun fact: David Gilmour played at the United Center 2 days before the Auditorium gig, and the reason why he booked at that venue instead of the United Center on the 6th was because Iron Maiden had already claimed that date. Those sleek bastards.
