And the title could be "Then Came the Last Days of July".

Nice find Ralph, I'll bet it was Mr. Tait whom our host was familiar with; FWIW, Tucson was/is a hell-hole. If it wasn't for the college, it would be completely overrun by hippies and methheads.

I found this pic of William Tait in the Stony Brook college magazine, plus the guy who got away - both SBU students - and both 24, which is older than I thought they'd be... the more I read about this sorry affair, the crazier it all sounds - the two guys with the guns let an injured witness escape in the middle of the desert, and then they themselves fled with only a part of the money...

Here ya go Buck. I even "wrote" the lyrics for ya. Parched land no desert sand, sun was just a dot And a little bit of water goes a long way, 'cause it's hot Three good buddies were laughing and smoking in the back Of a rented ford They couldn't know they weren't going far Each one with the money in his pocket Could go out and buy himself a brand new car But they all had the money they had Money they hoped would take them very far The sky was bright, a traffic light, now and then a truck And they hadn't seen a cop around all day They brought everything they needed bags and scales to weigh the stuff The driver said the border's just over the bluff It wasn't until the car suddenly stopped In the middle of a cold and barren place And the other guy turned and spilled Three boys blood, did they know a trap had been lain? They're ok the last days of July, I'll be breathing dry air I'm leaving soon, the others are already there You wouldn't be interested in coming along, instead of staying here They say the west is nice this time of year

Good thing Buck didn't wait too long to write that song or the lyrics would need to be changed to:
Each one with the money in his pocket - could go out and put a down payment on a brand new car
Anyway thanks for posting these articles - I had previously searched the net for hours looking for the real story behind the song. The one burning question I always had was did the survivor know about the song?

The first thing you have to do is suspend any notion of rational thought/behavior/impulse control/future time orientation when it comes to the these types of individuals/situations. What I found interesting is that over the years the story was played out to be a couple of innocent kids venturing out to the desert to score some dope as a rite of passage when in reality it was a large scale transaction to facilitate some on-going drug enterprise. Say my name...

My first new car cost $3k, a Toyota Corolla, bought four years after writing Last Days. I remember the 9 thousand cash figure, hence the lyric. I never claimed the the boys were innocent. They went out there to buy weight. Eric puts his own narrative on the introduction to LDOM. He sounds like he's pro-pot, but he hasn't smoked in decades. I'd say he's against incarceration for pot. The only guy I knew was Tait, and only in passing. Again, Eric's introduction embellishes the bare facts.

Looks like this is Steve Lewis one of the shooters, and it looks like he is still serving his life sentence in Arizona. The other guy, Doyal, may be dead. You can view more on the Arizona inmate locator. S Lewis was admitted to ADC 4/2/71 which would jive with around the time he was convicted in late March of 71. Attachments:

There's an "Arizona inmate locator"?? :-) As far as I know, Derrell Lynn Doyal died in AZ in 2007: death-records.mooseroots.com/d/n/Derrell-DoyalSteven Lee Lewis, the other convicted murderer, is still in an Arizona prison - he's inmate #030512 - as you say, he entered the prison system on 4/2/1971, so he's been there as long as BOC have been BOC!! By the way - in 1975, he escaped but was caught hiding in a field:

Pretty wild that you found these articles. The whole thing is pretty surreal.
