Buck, looking forward to your upcoming New England run. I will be attending both. The Keene show marks to the day, 40 years to first seeing BOC (Boston Music Hall March 30, 1978), and also my first concert. I believe those shows were recorded for Some Enchanted Evening, and an out-take was used on the remaster reissue of the CD. FYI to all attending the Narrows in Fall River; it is a BYOB venue, and outside food is allowed. Cooler needs to fit under your seat for all you lushes.

I believe those shows were recorded for Some Enchanted Evening, and an out-take was used on the remaster reissue of the CD. Wouldn't it be nice if all those gigs that were recorded for OYF and SEE were released (as they are) on special, limited edition CDs...? So many reels of fantastic, wonderful live material seems to have been left untouched and unheard, their precious contents slowly, but relentlessly oxidising away and being lost to posterity... But hey - not to worry - they've just put out OYF on blue vinyl... and if we keep our fingers crossed, there may be another "Very Best Essential Super Hits" compilation out soon... it's been weeks since the last one, and I'm getting withdrawal symptoms...

I do have an excellent recording of my first show. Memories from 40 years ago; it was the only time I saw the laser show. It was the only time seeing the band play 'We Gotta Get Out of This Place", and "Kick Out the Jams". Be Bop Deluxe opened, who I thoroughly enjoyed, but never saw them or Bill Nelson again in concert. I was 13 at the time, and the show was on a school night...it still amazes me my mother let me go. I'm the youngest of four kids, so I was chomping at the bit to go to a concert, seeing my older siblings catching many great acts of the 70's. A 1000+ concerts later, it never grows old. The excitement of live music keeps me coming back for more.

I do have an excellent recording of my first show. Do you mean the 30 Mar 78 Lampinski recording? If that IS the gig you're talking about - can I ask: I had access to some of the original roadies' schedules for that period, and they say unequivocally that there were TWO Boston gigs originally scheduled with Be Bop Deluxe: 30 Mar 1978 31 Mar 1978 Dan Lampinski's recording was from the 30th, so that seems pretty kosher, but I've never had anyone actually confirm they went to that SECOND gig on the 31st... do you have have any info one way or the other about that second Boston gig and whether or not you think it happened...?

Setlists.fm has a setlist from the March 31st show. Unfortunately, I cannot recall any info about any other show other than the one I attended. As for the recording, someone posted it at BOCfans.com a number of years ago; it was my "holy grail". Buck and Eric signed the ticket stub at the Hoboken show.

I saw BOC twice on their 1978 UK tour, Manchester & Liverpool, they were on fire! They played both Kick out the Jams & We Gotta Get out of this Place at both shows. Sadly we got Japan rather than Be Bop Deluxe as support & at Liverpool the lasers were reduced to Albert's drum solo. Great gigs.

at Liverpool the lasers were reduced to Albert's drum solo That got me some stick at school, I can tell you... if you remember, that 78 tour had two parts - there were a few UK dates, then BOC went off to Europe, and then they finished back here with some more UK dates at the end - well, I'd been to five gigs on that first leg and when I eventually turned up back in class after my mystery "illness" (so far as the school was concerned) I was raving about the amazing laser show I'd been seeing - so much so, that most of my class - even people who'd had no real interest in BOC - turned up to see the amazing laser-show when BOC hit Liverpool on that second leg... when you're at school, you were always trying to turn people onto your favourite band, and that was my enticement to try to get people to come along and to try and hook them into BOC... However, when the use of the lasers was curtailed by the venue, so much so that, as far I can recall, there was just a very limited use of one laser, then it was me who got the blame for it - for weeks!! I never got to hear the end of it... this despite the fact that BOC put on a great show musically - but most of the people didn't seem to want to acknowledge that - no, they just wanted to moan at me because I'd "promised" them something that didn't happen for whatever reason. "Philistines" was too grand a description for them - "ignorant knobheads", I believe, was how I summed up their attitude at the time ... The annoying thing is, the laser show was working fine a couple of nights later in Newcastle and then again in Hammersmith (yes, my mystery illness had returned), so I didn't think it was because of damage to the lasers etc that we missed out... One weird thing and I have no idea of how true it was - I actually complained to the venue about them not letting BOC use their full laser arsenal, and I got told some rambling story that the next day or so they were staging some event there that was going to have Prince Charles in attendance, and they didn't want to encourage the crowd to cause any damage or mess or some such... I didn't understand that then, and I still don't understand it now... but the upshot was, whereas everyone in my year seemed to blame me for Liverpool, I, on the other hand, have always blamed Prince Charles...

Yeah the lack of lasers was disappointing at Liverpool. The laser show at Manchester was just incredible, the Free Trade Hall was a relatively small venue & the lasers just seemed to fill the place. Weirdly though the Liverpool gig felt more immediate & has remained vivid in my memory. It was almost as if the band felt they had to up their game to make up for the lack of lasers. There was a number of ignorant knobheads present though, I think we got about three songs in before the wheres the lasers calls started from some parts of the audience. I'm sure this died out well before the end of the show, the band had clearly won them over/beaten them into submission. It was a great night even though we missed the last train home & I got involved with a scuffle with one of BOC's roadies at the stage door after the gig. Fortunately despite being a lot bigger/older than me he was also a lot more stoned. This didn't spoil the evening though & gave me an anecdote I could trot out for a few weeks afterwards. Talking of Liverpool & BOC do you remember the large chaos symbol painted on the inside wall of a bridge on the approach to Lime Street Station? Were you responsible for it?

I seem to recall Eric mentioning something at the end of the show to the effect of "the powers that be" stopping the use of the lasers at. I have also heard the Prince Charles story & had attributed that to Eric as well but its a long time ago & I could be confused!

I was joking about Charles. As I recall there was a local Council beef with the laser use in one of the UK shows, I guess it was that one.
