"True, lured by the almond eyes and Willendorf curves of Mammon, they left the Greasers to wander in a netherworld, becoming jerky-gnawing Hungry Ghosts." The writer clearly believes that if his writing contains enough esoteric references he will be seen as some sort of genius. Really, he's just pedantic.

This kind of writing might have been considered mainstream in the early Cream Magazine days, or Crawdaddy. I found it nostalgic, and I suspect author Tim Sommer thought so too writing it. Weird website, that insidehook.com.

Weird website, that insidehook.com. Thank you. I'm also confused by this idea of bands needing to always be exactly the same from inception to the end. He and a lot of others are the type to praise any band's "good old days" and find a reason why "they changed and it sucks now." Feh. What if Fleetwood Mac never changed? No Rumours. ZZ Top? No Eliminator. Golden Earring? No Moontan. The Beatles? No Sgt. Pepper. And of course... BOC? No Agents! Or Fire. Or Symbol

Actually this review is a really entertaining piece of work. While I don't agree with the writers premise that there is nothing worthwhile after Spectres, I think his summation of early BOC is spot on.

From where I listen, the BÖC journey is marked by the recording and experience of live performances, not studio recordings. I greatly value the black and white years, but primarily because of the quality of those songs, performed live. From Last Days to TRATB to D and S to Astronomy, give me the live versions, every time. And while it’s debatable whether or not the studio recordings improved, through the years, it’s safe to say, In my experience, that the band continued to maintain a quality product, in some ways, even improve, as musicians, throughout the years. They’ve stood the test of time. As for my junior high and high school years, 72-77, I’ll never forget the magic, but the epiphenomenal aspect of nostalgia can distort our memory, making those days seem like “the good ol’ days” when, really, they weren’t good in every way. There’s pro’s and con’s to every era.
