I got thru this guys bottom rankings and gave up after about 6 or so as I disagreed with his "reviews" of all of them.

Yeah seen this before. I disagree with most of it & although I enjoyed his BOC books, I don't think that Martin Popoff actually gets or even likes BOC.

I suspect a lot of what seems like negative comments from Martin about the band, such as the obscure nature of some of the lyrical content or BÖC's tendency to lean more towards "proto-metal" or more 60s flavored sounds than the hard rock or heavy metal of the 1970s, are intended to be more like observations than critique. But even so, it seems to me like Martin is more interested in the band and its history more than he is a super fan boy who loves them. Or maybe that's just him putting on his proffessional "journalist/rock critic" hat whenever he is writing or speaking about BÖC in public. Maybe on the drive home, he cranks up "Let Go" and rocks out. Who knows.

I don't know about Martin, but he's a serious scholar of the era, as evidenced by his life's published work. Of course being a scholar and having a token will get you on the subway. He's put in the listening time, and the palaver talking about it, no doubt. You know about opinions, everyone's got one.
If the article encourages one newcomer to listen to BOC, it's to the good. Any publicity is good publicity. I might not argue with "Astronomy," it's a nice story, it's got the great Am, G, F chord progression and the live version blazes bright. The thing about BOC is there's so much to dig into. And that's my opinion as a listener, all these years after the creation of the catalog.
Today you can make your own playlists, and ignore the also-rans. That's what I'd do. I do it with other artists. I tend to listen to entire LP's only with records I liked in the day. I don't hear any modern records I'd listen to the whole thing. Chris Cornell's "Higher Truth" comes close.

I really enjoyed Martin’s first BOC book.
Sure wish his awful editing of the second edition didn’t ruin my opinion of his writing.
I know this is a petty issue of mine, but how many here can say they’ve completed Martins Work, Robert Galbraith’s CAREER OF EVIL and Allas Shrugged?!?!? 😅😅 “I know Good Editing” - Cormoran Strike

how many here can say they’ve completed Martins Work, Robert Galbraith’s CAREER OF EVIL and Allas Shrugged?!?!? "Allas"...? :-) Not sure where Ayn Rand fits in to the above sequence, but my thoughts regarding Popoff are probably on the whole positive - for a start, we got a book on BOC, so there's that, plus there was a fair amount of new, previously unseen material in there - yes, OK there was a lot of rehashed previously published interview stuff also included, but I didn't mind that - he'd organised it all in a chronological manner and I'm all for the chronology, so that was fine - I wasn't looking for a Meltzer or Lester Bangs-style prose overlay on top to get in between me and the material - maybe if there were TEN books out there about BOC, then we could get into a discussion about the importance of style... As for Robert Galbraith, I agree pretty much with this collection of musings: www.hotrails.co.uk/bociaq/boc_myths/jk_rowling.htm
