> It took the exit of original lead singer Les Braunstein – who was replaced by Eric Bloom – and a particularly scathing review of one of their shows at the Fillmore East to convince band manager Sandy Pearlman that Soft White Underbelly needed a new name.
I keep seeing that reference, but I find it very confusing because:
(a) the Truscott review wasn't that scathing - it was actually a useless, lazy piece of writing, and the SWU throwaway comment was refuted by Robert Christgau anyway in the same publication two weeks later
(b) all the gigs following that Fillmore East show during the next 6 months or so that I know about were performed as SWU. In fact, the EARLIEST SFG designated gig that I know about was May 1970 - that's TEN months after the Fillmore show...

Well I always thought that SWU was a decent band name. I always like Stalk Forest Group because it sounded both odd & mysterious, the same could of course be said of BOC.
These kind online best/worst type lists are usually moderately entertaining but also swallow & often ill informed.

During high school in the 60s we formed a band where I played guitar with and we called ourselves The Brazen Men. We played instrumental music in the vein of The Ventures, The Shadows and the like. We wore white shirts with gold vests. I'm not sure what color pants we wore, either black or tan.
I thought that was a cool name for a band.

I thought that was a cool name for a band. Me too! I can't help but think of the bottom side of a nice brook trout when I hear it.
