I have been sampling all 14 songs of The Symbol Remains on iTunes. I am loving everything I have sampled so far, and very very excited to hearing it in in full!! One thing I have noticed is that it is modern sounding but retaining the musical virtues we expect. Lots of variation in styles. Some headbangers, some twang, some catchy pop, some undefined!! It's why we love these guys.

I can't wait for you folk to hear the whole record. I can't sample the record on iTunes in MD, so I don't know what clips they're posting.
The record could be approached as a buffet of tunes, although you could listen to the entire record if you've got an hour to spend. I've done that almost a dozen times since it was finished. It holds together in sequence.

That is some toe-tapping stuff right there.

yep, no problem for me in France, but I'm using the iTunes app and I'm looking for the album and not what it wants to show me.
well, imho, the best BÖC records are quite homegenous, T&M, ST, CE and FoUO... so, i'm waiting for BÖC buffet, of course...

Really looking forward to hearing the whole record. It was fun to hear Eddie Trunk raving about the album today during Buck's interview.

Just heard the previews on Apple Music. Other than 2 already released songs I'm really liking Florida Man, Secret Road, The Alchemist, Fight. Secret Road sounds the most beautiful to me judging from the previews. It gives me that Harvest Moon or Perfect Water vibe. I'm really wondering what Stand and Fight will sound like, right now it really reminds me of Metallica's For Whom The Bell Tolls. Tainted Blood really sounds like a glam rock ballad which is kinda weird to me, doesn't sound like a BÖC tune to me personally. I'm gonna be honest, I find Richie's vocals very weird for BÖC, it will definitely take some time getting used to. He has very different vocal vibe than all the previous BÖC vocalists.
Is it weird that I mostly like Buck's tunes? Buck just has this sprinkle of magic on his tunes that is hard to describe.
I won't be too harsh on Richie's tunes, I definitely need to hear whole songs first, I'll probably end up liking them anyways.

I won't be too harsh on Richie's tunes, I definitely need to hear whole songs first, I'll probably end up liking them anyways. I feel like Richie's voice is very malleable and at times he can sound different depending on the song. Tainted Blood sounds like it could almost be Dream Theater, however I think Richie takes himself a lot less seriously than James LaBrie, who always seems so earnest when singing some really ridiculous lyrics. It reminds me thematically of Nosferatu, but with a little bittersweet tragedy from I Love The Night thrown in. No, it doesn't sound like BOC 47 years ago, but BOC is what BOC say they are, so I am accepting this as part of the BOC canon. Iron Maiden "fans" can shit on Blaze Bayley all they want, but his vocals really WORK on a number of songs, including especially The Clansman. He doesn't sound like Bruce Dickinson OR Paul Di'Anno, but it's still Iron Maiden, because that has and always will be Steve Harris' band, so what Steve Harris says is Iron Maiden, IS Iron Maiden. I get that people are finding it weird that BOC isn't the same band that sang Sandy Pearlman's inscrutable and darkly poetic lyrics, but honestly, that ended the day they all got four track machines and started writing on their own. True Confessions, Debbie Denise, etc., don't sound like BOC if everybody tries to compare them to their first three albums. Taken as a whole, they have no genre. There is an undercurrent of darkness, tales of evil, stories of alien abductions and men in black, etc. The Old Gods Returned and they were One Step Ahead of the Devil, but they were also In Thee with Lonely Teardrops. It's not a big stretch for me with the new sound Richie brings. It's just another layer. For the record, I actually really love Dream Theater, it's just that James LaBrie is always so damn seeeeeeeeeerious.

Spot on, Ocean. I don’t think you can get a full sense of the songs by just the 90 second samples (though I am ITCHING to hear Train True like crazy). I have a feeling, though, that once we hear the whole songs, even with Richie singing, it’s going to sound like BOC as soon as we hear the vocal harmonies and most notably, once Buck lays down a solo or two.

I agree with what has been said, that's why I said I'll truly rate the songs when I manage to hear them whole. I'm definitely giving Richie a chance. I guess what I wanted to say in previous post was that Richie is technically a great singer and can sing all kinds of genres just great, he just comes off like a bit of a generic 80s singer and that is not his fault, it's just how his voice is to me. Bouchard brothers vocals for example give me that feeling of "drunk despair" if that makes sense which definitely makes their vocals more unique. They weren't technically as good singers as Richie, but they have their own special vibe. Richie's vocals are good, they just don't have any special sprinkle to them.
Since you've mentioned Dream Theater's James LaBrie, he is a perfect example of a singer who ruins otherwise amazing band. He's the reason I can't really listen to Dream Theater even though they are amazing musically. Like you've said, he takes himself way too seriously and manages to sound quite generic at the same time.
But I don't doubt that whole record will be great! I'm actually a fan of Richie's playing, he's an amazing musician overall.

I hear what you're all saying, and I'm looking forward to your comments after you can hear "Symbol" in its entirety. I enthusiastically welcome Richie as the third lead voice of BOC, and he may be just beginning to find his own voice, having perfected his craft of reproducing covers. It will be illuminating to listen to him in the context of his song writing. Of course the distinctive vocal styles of Eric and me are pretty well immutable at this point.
I'm enjoying the thoughtful discussion in this thread.

I saw them live about a decade ago after Mike Mangini took over from Mike Portnoy, and that made them a much better band in my opinion. And it made LaBrie's voice easier to take. Portnoy's lyrics coming out of James LaBrie's mouth was just a horrible combination (although admittedly the AA Suite was pretty damn good). Richie I feel much differently about. In Tainted Blood I hear a Dream Theater influence but with better vocals. In The Return of St. Cecilia, it SOUNDS like a classic BOC song, with the instrumentation, the sensibilities, the use of the organ/keyboard, etc. My whole thought with him is I like him, he's not as familiar, maybe, but he adds another layer to what BOC is. As a side note I also just like that Buck and Eric have embraced him as part of the band because I always feel bad for musicians who are taken on as "touring musicians" and aren't given the respect of being considered a member. Darryl Jones has been the bassist for The Rolling Stones for 26 years. I realize it's their band to do with as they please, but I find that incredibly disrespectful.
