Fastest I've ever gone on land was 140mph. Breaking the sound barrier on tires seems totally weird. Tell us more about that one. Yeah like...what kind of car, where would be totally cool!

Definitely a significant achievement since his 600.601 mph record was way back in 1965. Looks like now the one to beat is the British ThrustSSC. 763.035 mph in 1997, and the first to exceed the speed of sound. 0.05 miles per gallon. Both a little fast for me...... Fastest I've ever gone on land was 140mph. Breaking the sound barrier on tires seems totally weird. Well you've got me beat. I wasn't driving. Most generic cars had a speedometer max at 120. A few times somebody I was with pinned one, but I know it wasn't 140. A friend of mine has (or had) a new Charger that he turned into a Hellcat. He filmed the speedometer and dash during a run - on a rural road. I need to see what he got to, but he got there fast. Muscle cars were a big thing back here in the 70's. The good old days.

During a cross-Canada bike trip, 118 mph on my Norton Commando on a deserted stretch of the Transcanada Highway, just off the north shore of Lake Superior. I realized I'd rather not become ground tenderloin if I hit the tiniest of rocks at that speed and ended the whole exercise. Dangerously hypnotic.

Tell us more about that one. Yeah like...what kind of car, where would be totally cool! It was in high school. I had a friend, an adopted only child with indulgent parents. He'd had a succession of sports cars, first a '63 split window Stingray, then a 3.8 XKE, then a 4.2 XKE, then two Corvette big blocks. The one I'm talking about was a '66 427, with side pipes, the HD Muncie 4-speed trans, and whatever race options he could order. At that time the state had built a brand new four lane road connecting two east west Suffolk County roads to serve the then then unbuilt Stonybrook University and later the Stonybrook Medical Center. At that time the road served practically no one, and was largely unused, having just been opened. He, me, and Andrew Winters (bass player of Soft White Underbelly,) rode out to this road, to find out what the Corvette could do top end. It was right around 140, on the speedo. After we'd all ridden with Michael (the lucky car owner) at top speed, Andrew and I got out of the car so we could experience Mike blasting by us at 140. It was a hoot. There are no roads today anywhere in the NY metro area where you could do this without endangering people or attracting unwanted attention. There are stretches of Interstate highway where you could attain speed like this, and today's performance cars are much more powerful than '60's muscle cars.

Sounds like it was a great time! And Buck you've really got great clarity for something that happened back in the 60s! That is a wonderful blessing in itself to be able to recall and relive those moments in our minds after so much time has passed. I hope I can still do that at 75!

I got my 73 Triumph up to about 80. What a white knuckle ride! Never did it again.

It was a kickstart '73 850 Commando with a Dunstall exhaust system (and mini-ape handlebars, custom paint and a 30 inch sissy bar, oy.) Very smooth ride once you were past idle. I had a Triumph 750 Bonneville before that, now it would rattle your fillings, that's for sure, as well as marking its territory with oil at every stop. The Norton was way more civilized.
