Deep Track of the Day #237 - 7/3/22 Christopher Cross – “Minstrel Gigolo” from Christopher Cross This song features an incredible guitar solo from Eric Johnson that is worth the price of admission alone. As much as Christopher Cross is derided by some as dad rock or yacht rock, I don’t mind listening to music such as this when I’m in a mood to. My tastes run the gamut from the softest folk to some pretty heavy metal, and I enjoy indulging in soft rock from time to time. Also, Christopher Cross is a fairly accomplished guitar player in his own right, even if it isn’t him performing the solo on this track. Buck did a great job on this cover:

I know very little about Christopher Cross & I'm certainly not a fan. That said Buck's cover really is great, especially the fabulous guitar solo near the end.

Buck did a great job on this cover: (video not re-quoted)
I know very little about Christopher Cross & I'm certainly not a fan. That said Buck's cover really is great, especially the fabulous guitar solo near the end. I know a little about Cross just due to proximity. He graduated from the high school one district over from me, less than 5 miles away. I knew a lot of people that went to his high school, but he was a couple years older than me and a year or two younger than my friends. I read that he was in some small band here that played at some of the same haunts that my wife talked about going to when she was in HS - the same one Cross graduated from but different years. There were quite a few garage bands that played for these different places and probably most people from back then wouldn't remember if he played for them or not. I'm not a "fan" either but a few of his songs were pretty good if I remember right.

Deep Track of the Day #239 - 7/5/22 The Church – “Memories in Future Tense” from Of Skins and Heart
You know Under The Milky Way. Everybody does. Their entire body of work is exceptional. I could have chosen any track from Of Skins and Heart, my favorite album of theirs, so I chose one that has my favorite title. The songs are all just fantastic and it was too hard to choose.

Buck is doing a great rendition there! That’s the go-to song to hear Christopher Cross’ guitar playing skills. Rick Beato does a great dissection of that track and plays a lot of that solo isolated.

Great stuff! I love The Church. Album wise The Blurred Crusade is my favourite but you can make a strong argument for any of them being the best.

Deep Track of the Day #240 - 7/6/22 Halestorm – “Heart of Novocaine” from Vicious
Lzzy Hale is a skilled singer in many respects, and I love her intensity as a metal singer, but I also love her ability to have so much pathos regardless of the intensity. It can be easy to emote at a 10. Some overdo it when the song is only at a 2. Lzzy does it well at all levels of intensity. I initially planned to use their cover of Soundgarden’s Fell on Black Days which has a great dynamic performance, but ultimately I think an original such as this is a great showcase, and I love it.

Deep Track of the Day #241 - 7/7/22 UFO – “Space Child” from Phenomenon
Just a lovely little classic rock composition by an underrated band. I love that fingerpicked electric intro and just the soundscapes throughout.

Deep Track of the Day #242 - 7/8/22 Tame Impala – “Apocalypse Dreams” from Lonerism
I think the Beatles comparisons are inevitable when you sound like John Lennon, so at a certain point you may as well lean into it. This song is captivating in how it blends vintage psychedelic sensibilities with modern sounds.

Deep Track of the Day #243 - 7/13/22 4 Non Blondes – “Morphine & Chocolate” from Bigger, Better, Faster, More!
I took a few days off from doing this because… I don’t have a very good work ethic.
Anyway, 4 Non Blondes, like The La’s, are one album wonders that I wish could have had many more. I think the reason I love Morphine and Chocolate is because it is a lot less straightforward a rock song as much of the rest of the album. It’s a little bit trippy. Linda Perry is an expert songwriter and has made a great living doing so. It’s such a shame more of it couldn’t have been with this band.

Deep Track of the Day #244 - 7/14/22 Berlin – “In My Dreams” from Love Life
It starts off with a swelling synth and instrument by instrument a haunting tune starts to fill out. Such beautiful crystal clear guitar like chimes, whiplashing reverb. I love this beautiful song. It always dances on the edge of going full throttle but I think it’s more interesting the way it holds itself back just a little.

Deep Track of the Day #245 - 7/15/22 ABBA – “Love Isn’t Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough)” from Ring Ring
I’ve joked before that I would try to do every artist from ABBA to ZZ Top. Well, here is ABBA. I absolutely love them, and this song makes me happy every time I hear it.

Deep Track of the Day #246 - 7/16/22 ZZ Top – “Ko Ko Blue” from Rio Grande Mud
It’s a straightforward boogie like ZZ Top does best, just with a wild harmonica solo instead of Billy’s usual guitar work. I enjoy this song very much from it’s opening licks, the drums, the way the bass adds some nasty fuzz to it once it reaches the solo section, and the unusual way in which they choose to end the song.
And now I’ve done ABBA and ZZ Top, so I have to find a new joke.
