My fave ABBA tune is Knowing Me Knowing You They had a number of good tunes, that being one of them. I didn't know until recently that A B B A was the first letter of each of the four member's names.

Deep Track of the Day #247 - 7/17/22 Sunnyboys – “Trouble in my Brain” from Sunnyboys
Sunnyboys are under-appreciated Australian new wave band that never really struck gold in the United States. That is quite a shame, because they clearly have the gift of great hooks and catchy choruses. I like this song for the sort of discordant opening and surf sensibilities and some great piano playing underneath it all. The dissonant guitar outro also adds another unique layer. Altogether, it’s a great song by a great band who deserves better exposure.

Deep Track of the Day #248 - 7/18/22 Carly Simon – “Boys in the Trees” from Boys in the Trees
I was introduced to Carly Simon by being a ajames Bond fanatic from my earliest years. Nobody Does It Better is still my favorite theme (well… tied with A View to a Kill by Duran Duran). Boys in the Trees is a lovely soft guitar ballad where Carly Simon’s heavenly voice just swirls through. It is also the name of her autobiography.

Deep Track of the Day #249 - 7/19/22 The Animals – “I Believe to My Soul” from The Animals on Tour
The opening parallel fourths on the piano almost set a visual scene for me. I picture raindrops hitting a city sidewalk at night. I can’t explain why. The “plink” of the keys perhaps makes me think of fat raindrops hitting the ground. I couldn’t really say. I just know that this song has always been one of my favorites of The Animals. The original by Ray Charles is on an electric piano, and despite my love of the instrument, I’ll commit heresy and say I like the sound of this cover better than the original. It may be the only time I could say that about a Ray Charles song, as he was one of my first favorites along with Chuck Berry. I wore my best of Ray Charles cassette out when I was a child because I would play it every day.
It was by way of Blue Öyster Cult’s cover of We Gotta Get Out Of This Place that I was introduced to this amazing but short-lived band (in their original run anyway). Eric Burdon’s voice is so expressive and unique that I was hooked immediately. While I know he continued on with various lineups calling themselves The Animals, the magic of the original run of five albums is without equal.

Thank you for this Lauren! I have never heard this version of the song but I must say after just one listen I will be playing it often. I grew up in a big Ray Charles house and the only other version of this song I've heard is from Humble Pie. Which is pretty damn good too.

My lifelong love of electric piano is directly attributable to my youth obsession with Ray Charles. The intro to What’d I Say is permanently imprinted in my brain.

Deep Track of the Day #250 - 7/20/22 Styx – “You Need Love” from Styx II
Much like my choice for Lynyrd Skynyrd, I’m choosing a song here that is not deep per se, but that I believe needs better recognition compared to the songs the band is better known for. Styx has no shortage of songs that have made an impact, such as Lady, Come Sail Away, Too Much Time on my Hands, The Grand Illusion, Remegade, Blue Collar Man, and Mr. Roboto. I have never once heard the radio play You Need Love despite its status as a charting hit. It needs some love.

I’m not gonna do this for a few days. I got COVID (again) and I’m sick as a dog and my brain is just fried.

Thanks all. I’m just dealing with brain fog and I’m constantly tired on top of everything else. I’m not nearly as sick as the first time I got it (although that’s a low bar because I was practically bedridden for two weeks the first time, sleeping 16 hours per day), so as bad as I feel right now, it could be SO much worse. So I’m looking on the bright side as much as I can

Deep Track of the Day #251 - 7/30/22 Operation Ivy – “Jaded” from Energy (reissued as Operation Ivy)
All I know is that I don’t know how I made it into my thirties before listening to this album. A dear friend and I rehearsed Knowledge for a show that never came to fruition and learning it led me to Operation Ivy’s frustratingly brief discography of one EP and one LP. As with The Las and 4 Non Blondes earlier during this run of Deep Track entries, I’m tackling yet another one album wonder that deserved so much more. This one album was a huge influence on so many future bands. I like this song in particular for the number of changes packed into two minutes. The rapid verses slow down considerably into the chorus, an unexpected inversion for this genre. And it all flows so well.
Aside: I’m back to doing this after my second bout with COVID. For the last week and a half I’ve been so fatigued as to feel like I was drugged. Altogether unpleasant, and yet not nearly as bad as the first time, thank goodness. Could have been a lot worse. Keep yourselves safe and take care of yourselves.

Deep Track of the Day #252 - 7/31/22 Mr. Bungle – “Bungle Grind” from The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo
Mr. Bungle decided to dust off an unreleased album of thrash metal that predates their most well-known music and to reproduce it. Brand new recording of unreleased 80’s thrash metal? I’m in! I could have chosen any track from this album but Bungle Grind is the most FUN to me. While I could have chosen a track from California or Disco Volante as more representative of their overall body of work, I ultimately find myself listening to this album over and over again in a way that I don’t with California. Maybe it’s the still fresh in my mind, but honestly I just am so psyched to get a high quality recording of something that previously only existed in poor quality tapes and downloads.
