I've often wondered why songwriters will put certain words in their song titles in parentheses, and I've never gotten a clear explanation. Is it to emphasize part of the title, or maybe differentiate it from another song title that might be similar? I've just been curious about this.

( Don't Fear ) The Answers I'm ok with parentheses (as long as they aren't nested). Nested parentheses remind me of when I used to have to write programs in the Lisp programming language. Here's a sample (a recursive factorial function):
(defun factorial (n) (if (= n 0) 1 (* n (factorial (- n 1)))))
Is that bone-chilling (or what) ?!

If you indent the closing brackets to mirror their opening ones, they'll become (visually) easier to follow and their bone-chillingness will thereby be greatly reduced...

Parentheses can cause real problems. I was working booth duty at one of the very first ever national personal computer shows (mid 70s) and a lot of companies were showing off their very first computers. So it was a real big deal, somewhat like NAMM for early PCs. So we wanted everything working right. Anyway for our computer we had a version of BASIC that was pretty nice for the time. I knew the author very well and he challenged me to find a bug. So for whatever reason for my first try I entered the following: (((((((((((((((((1+1))))))))))))))))) I think I used 17 sets because it was above and not a multiple of the magic numbers 8 and 16. CRASH AND BURN! Man was he torqued off. Fortunately he figured out what the problem was, but couldn't fix it at the show. He cleared the screen and told me "Don't show that!"

Well IMHO It Is(Or It Isn't)meaning(ful) Yep. It's the music that matters.

There is list after list of these things, and some make NO sense whatsoever, at least to me. These did NOT come off of the top of my head, but at least I recognize the songs.
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction
(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)
(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay
(I Just) Died In Your Arms
(Everything I Do) I Do It For You
Don’t You (Forget About Me)
It’s Only Rock ’n’ Roll (But I Like It)
Break on Through (To the Other Side)
Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)
Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There Is a Season)

And closer to home, directly from BÖC's own website (the old one):
Mistress of the Salmon Salt (Quicklime girl)
Before the Kiss (A Redcap)
(Don't Fear) The Reaper
E. T. I. (Extra Terrestrial Intelligence)
You're Not The One (I Was Looking For)
Vengeance (The Pact)

Sandy Pearlman liked to use parenthesis in titles. He suggested it for "Reaper."
