B.O.C’s self-titled album released on this day 50 years ago. 16 Jan 1972 fell on a Sunday - if there's one day of the week it wouldn't have been released on, it'd be Sunday... Current best guess for the release date was Monday 17 Jan 1972 ("Mondays at Midnight") but probably Tuesday 18 Jan 1972 was the first time you could realistically buy one in the shops... BTW: Pre 1989, the standard release day for new LPs in the U.S. was Mondays, but after that, the release day changed to "Tuesdays at midnight" and that remained the norm until 2015 when it was changed to "Fridays at midnight" ("Global Release Day" a.k.a. "New Music Fridays")....

Inspiring bands as diverse as Tears For Fears to Metallica. What a damn fine album!

Ha, seems like just yesterday. Oh, for a time machine. Just to fly around and peek in.
I bet relatively soon, there'll be so much recording of life and data storage, you can pretty much do that with VR glasses.

I had to plug in my Gibson SG today and see how much of that first album I could still play, I used to know 6 of the songs really well. The debut album is in my top 3 favs for BOC albums for so many reasons. That murky sound, it's just so haunting and unique, the guitar tracks sound amazing, that guitar tone is just incredible. Sometimes I think I'm hearing a Fuzz pedal, not sure on that, but whatever they did it is super cool and there is no one even coming close to that killer guitar tone today, even with all the technology. I don't even know where to start on the songs, so many mind blowing riffs, the drums on Cities On Flame, the guitar solo on the end of Before The Kiss, that drum solo before Beautiful As A Foot. And the song titles are weird as hell, I remember when I was about 17 years old trying to understand what they were singing about. And tonight I dug into Telescopes, a song I've never tore apart with my guitar, and what a riot, awesome guitar grooves buried in the mix all over that song. I'm still having fun with this 36 years after I first heard it. I never tire of this album, along with Agents and Fire Of Unknown Origin, the debut is in my top 3 favorites. A spotless record from start to finish. Happy 50 years!!!

Thought Workshop was one of the highlights of the the first album show they did in the U.K.Buck's guitar is so neat on that tho different than say the live Perkins Palace version which is great too. That and Redeemed.

IMO best side enders in history-RedCap and Redeemed. How about "Fight?" Fight continues a good tradition of somber or mellow album closers that i think has been an essential part of the BOC formula since 1972 (some like QuickTime Girl are great but are outside the formula of course). Redeemed, Astronomy, Debbie Denise, Nosferatu, Lonely Teardrops, Don't Turn Your Back, Light Years of Love, etc. Fight fits right into that mold very well.

Somebody once said that Buck's leads are like horn arrangements and they used this song as an example. The first version of workshop I ever heard was from the promo EP on the Workshop of the Telescopes two disc set, because I got that compilation as a gift before I bought the debut album.

Truth of the matter is I never listen to the cd only listen on YT so I have zero idea the actual track order. All of those are great tunes I loved Debbie Denise as a side ender.

I only noticed recently that the chorus has alternating time signatures/mixed meter. It just flows so damn well.
