Been almost 3 years since I started this series of threads, time flies! I’ll try to finish before, hell, I dunno.
I caught a dozen shows, between 76 and 78, I went from being a senior in high school to my first year in the Army.
There were 5 shows in 76, all in Illinois or Indiana, and 3 of these shows were with Lasers. One thing, in general, I distinctly remember is that the 1976 video from DC area, while a good keepsake for us, and it’s pretty much all we have, it really doesn’t do the Agents Tour justice. And that’s putting it mildly. These shows had tremendous sound, spectacular lights and effects. As high quality the openers were, they were blown out, completely. And I’m talking UFO, Bob Seger, Rush, Black Oak, Stars, Angel, Eddie Money, Cheap Trick, and even Styx, who headlined, got their asses handed to them.
one of my fondest memories occurred in January, 1978, my brother, best friend and I did back to back shows, the first was in Springfield, IL, and the opener didn’t make it, neither did One of BOC’s trucks, which had their show outfits in it. The announcer came on and said “the opener didn’t show, who were they, anyway? So the good news is that we get to spend the entire evening with Blue Öyster Cult!”. They played over 2 hours, maybe 2 1/2, in brand new Jeans, Tour shirts, and tennis shoes. Plus, Albert (I thought it was Allen, at the time, maybe it was, we were in the last row of the balcony, all of my gang went -32 of us -) came out front and said “We are gunna play something old, something new, something borrowed, and something Blue…Blue Öyster Cult, that is.
I had been Buck’s biggest fan in my hometown, for years, but this night was such an affirmation, for me…so many guys in the gang came up to me, during the show, and after, in the halls at school, shaking their heads (up and down) in awe and admitting that I had been right, all those years.
The next night which was my last laser show (I incorrectly said on Ralph’s site that the previous night was the last one) and it was with Black Oak opening, the laser show was unforgettable, during Cities on Flame it looked like the walls were burning, and during Godzilla it looked like the entire back wall was shape shifting and we really freaked out.
Great sets, that year, with Kick Out The Jams and really tight Harvester and ETI guitar rave ups.
we all bought those pewter cult sign necklaces, and within a month, mine broke, my brother lost his, and my best friend put his on his cat and we had a two foot snowstorm and the cat ran off and never came back.
