When the album, Spectres, came out years ago I seem to remember at that time reading a Circus magazine article promoting the album. In the article I believe Buck stated in effect that his song, I Love the Night (and here is where my memory gets a bit murky) is a sequel or could be a sequel to DFtR. Can anyone confirm this or Buck, if you are reading perhaps you can confirm this? Is it possible that the Reaper is actually a vampire? The last 2 verses of DFtR could definitely lend itself to this interpretation. Could the female character in DFtR be, “the lovely lady in white” from ILtN sometime after “she had become like they are”? I really love these songs and I think it would be really cool if these songs were connected. And, can anyone tell me, (once again Buck if you are reading maybe you can provide an answer), if the version of I Love the Night on Spectres originally contained the extra verse and then was later edited out? If that is the case is there any chance of hearing that original recording with the extra verse?

It is played live that way often. Love this tune.

Buck released the original demo on his great Archives CD set, which made its way on to YouTube.

I've never seen any references in Circus to a thematic link between the two songs, only a "tonal" one - Buck even called ILTN "sort of like Son of Reaper" in Circus #170 (8 Dec 1977)... The next time I saw BOC covered in Circus in any major feature, (issue #193 - 10 Oct 1978), Eric said this: Funnily enough, EB has said in the past that he that he sees "After Dark" as a "sort of sequel" to "I Love the Night"...

To duckbarman- thank you for finding this article. Now that I’m reading what you posted I’m pretty sure this might be the article that I read some 45 years ago in Circus magazine. Is this something you found on line or is it in your collection of magazines?

"I Love The Night" is an exploration of the erotic side of vampirism. The fellow meets the stunning lady out in the dark, right on the heels of his breakup with his girlfriend. Besides being a fan of that aspect of vampirism, I think I just wanted to revisit that spooky mood that "Reaper" has. Regrettably, Sandy Pearlman edited the last verse out of the Spectres version for Vinyl side time reasons. Kinda spoils the story. But the mood is definitely there. I love listening to the song as much as playing it.

Buck- Personally, I really love that “spooky mood” that you speak of that you successfully recreated from DFtR for ILtN. I hope you get inspired again to bring that “spooky mood” for another song to put on BOC’s next album (hint, hint).😉

ILTN is one of, if not my favorite song.
As for Reaper, I’ve always pictured “and then he appeared, saying “don’t be afraid” the “he” being her love, not the Reaper. The Reaper is the personification of death, not a player in the song.
As for ILTN, the person transformed is the guy walking alone, and the person coming to him is the lady vampire.
With Reaper, the special sauce is love, and with ILTN, it’s the bite.

Did someone call me? :-P
DFTR and I Love The Night are probably 2 of my favorite BÖC songs of all time, they truly feel like movies and put you in certain gothic mood.

Is this something you found on line or is it in your collection of magazines? Unfortunately, I've have very few actual magazines left in my collection, but I do have some digital copies of various BOC articles etc... I can post that full Circus piece if you need it...

I Love The Night embedded into my subconscious mind long before I knew it was a Vampire song.
I played it on WETD, Alfred, NY, each week for 2 semesters. A student took to the song and wanted to talk about it every week, calling into the Radio Station. It was quite erotic!

Are you going through the dreaded "decluttering " stage of life? 'Fraid not - I'm still firmly locked into the "cluttering" stage - but when I was a young 'un, I seemed to think it was a great idea to cut up all my magazines and stick them on my wall or glue them onto my school books - basically, they'd generally fall foul of whatever stupid idea that wandered into my brain at the time, so I have no pristine stacks of Creem or Circus or whatever in my attic to call on, unfortunately... I wish I'd kept them, but I used to be an idiot... and, yes, I know: whaddya mean " used to be"...?
