The 1990’s were such a monumental decade for me, and I believe all of us who were around, then. For me, it was a time when I sensed (just an opinion, to each their own) that the band, especially Buck, hit yet another plateau, performance wise. Just listen to GpG’s “Big Sky Country” and hear for yourself. I just really dig the phrasing and effects Buck was using at that time. One show, in particular, was in St. Louis suburbs at a place called Big Kahuna’s. It was outdoors, BÖC set up on a flat bed truck, in the parking lot, girls from the bar were serving bottles of Bud, scantily clad, it was a glorious day. I went to a fenced off area with hopes to meet the band, and Jon Rogers came over to say hi and marveled at my ticket stubs and buttons collection. He filled in at a one off gig, in St. Louis, at least a dozen years later, and actually remembered me. Great guy!
Then, in 1994, I think, Cult Classic came out, I was at another show, in St. Louis, at Union Station, and bought the CD, and it had the fan club mailing address on it. You can see at least one song from that show on YouTube “Take Me Away”. I sent a letter to the fan club, and Bolle promptly responded, graciously answering about 20 questions that I had, about the band, etc. The most important of which was about obtaining touring info. He told me about this thing called the internet, BÖC-L and AOL and so you know exactly what I asked for Santa to bring me for Christmas…my first Gateway computer!
A few of y’all will remember me as “Bucks1Fan”, (they didn’t allow hashtags, at the time) and we hadn’t established SOBAK yet, so I went with Bucks1Fan and still use it, today.
AOL changed everything, for me. Starting in 1995, my number of shows went from 2 or 3 per year, to twice that, often 3 or 4 times that number. I saw 44 shows in the 90’s. so, not only was the quality there, omg the quantity just skyrocketed!
I finally met Buck and EB in 1996 at the KSHE concert cafe, yep, in St. Louis. Eric came out, after the show, and sat with us for awhile, then Buck came out for autographs. We had already met, online, so it was even more like we knew each other, already. Whenever we think back, we always say that it seems like we’ve known each other a lot longer than 26 years, more like 50. The opener, that night, was David Surkamp, who told of the show I’d attended back in 1974, when he opened for the Cult with Pavlov’s Dog, and BÖC blew the power grid, downtown, so they didn’t play, Friigid Pink went ahead and played, as headliner. I got my money back, since I was first in line, and then they quit giving refunds. If Buck ain’t there, neither is the MartMan.
some more great shows, in the late 90’s, especially the BDB benefit for Ricky Browning (love that little dude!) and our Clarksville weekend with Chuck and Keith, which shall remain undocumented. A “you had to be there” sort of thing.
Also met my Cult Bro’s Rob Reich and Jeff Turley, and many others, in the 90’s, dozens of shows with those guys! Miss my friend Lynn (Oceangypsy), but so glad so many of y’all are still around!
