Coming up in one week on June 21, 2022: The 20th Anniversary of “A Long Days Night”
(no, sorry, not a NEW concert announcement)
Not as significant as the upcoming 50th anniversary 3-night NY event coming up in September, but I thought this one deserved remembering (or introduced to any of you that may not be familiar with it) On June 21, 2002, Blue Öyster Cult gave an outstanding performance in Chicago, Illinois. June 21 was the summer solstice for the year 2002. The summer solstice is the day of the year with the longest period of daylight, so the concert was appropriately named “A Long Day's Night”. Now in 2022, the summer solstice is again on, guess what, June 21 - exactly 20 years later!
As Eric said before the concert encore: "BÖC on the summer solstice - yeahhh!"
For any unfamiliar with the concert, you can go to: hotrails.co.uk/history/2002.htm#JunGo down and find the Fri 14 Jun - Harbourfest- Racine,Wisconsin concert description to get a flavor of the Chicago concert. The concert was recorded live and was sold as both a CD and DVD (2 versions), and has now been re-mastered and re-released in Blu-ray format. Bits and pieces of the concert, and sometimes almost the whole thing, can be found on YouTube. In fact watching parts of the concert for the first time on YouTube is what got me re-interested in BÖC – and my wife introduced to BÖC and becoming a real fan. I have not seen/heard the new Blu-ray version, but the reviews I’ve read said the audio is much better than the original 2002 DVD that I have. We watched it again start to finish last night!

Some people said there were some "mistakes" in the Chicago show. Not sure if they were real or imagined. Nothing stood out to me, but we just "get into" the concert as a whole and probably would not notice anything subtle. And probably wouldn't care. Too bad the Racine show wasn't recorded in HD, even just one camera, with better audio. It's still fun to watch though as-is, but's it's been awhile since our last watch. The audience there had a real treat.

Yea, the concert on YouTube is 2 hrs 8 minutes. Nice! You were lucky to be there. And I don't know if it even includes the whole show. Maybe it was just a minute of intro missing. Played part of it again - sound really isn't that bad depending to what I'm listening on. I need to play with my A/V receiver with it's countless DSP modes to see if I can improve it - and on some others taken with cell phone mics. I might be missing out on some of these vids.

A few weeks before Long Day's Night, Eric was asking fans on his website what songs we'd like to hear (excepting all the usual ones we always clamor for like Nosferatu, Cagey Cretins, etc. :->). We were also talking baseball around that time so I *pitched* a baseball analogy: when you're leading late in the game, you have your 8th inning setup guy who's got a variety of pitches and then in the 9th you go with your high heat fireballer. So, Dominance & Submission and The Red & The Black. Well whaddya know? :->
Of course, I couldn't make the damn show!

Probably just as good at some other shows, but this is the one I remember. Cool that Eric asked.

A trivia question from my wife for anybody that was at the Chicago show:
Maybe it was the random audience shots that just happened to end up in the video(s), but the audience looked very predominately male. Before we got the DVD we kept watching the DFTR clip that somebody put up on YouTube and we were hard pressed to find any girls/women. Even tried pausing the video again and again. Yea, we could find a few here and there. Speculated on maybe why, like near a military base, but ending up ruling them out. On the full DVD we saw more, but percentage wise still didn't look like many.
Eyes playing tricks on us, the guys pushed their way to the front, a bunch of tall guys, or just the "way it was"?
