Couldn’t disagree more with Gene. Like them or not, there are MANY iconic artists who have sold boatloads and whose names are instantly recognizable. Even if you limit it to artists who can play an instrument and not just singers, there’s Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift for starters. As far as bands you have Pearl Jam, The or Killers. Now, would I put any of them up against the quality of The Beatles? Fuck no. But they ARE icons to varying degrees, whether Gene likes it or not.

Lady Gaga ? Jay Z ?
(edit : and yes, it's not Rock'n Roll per se, but totally Rock'n Roll if we take the Hall of Fame as a definition of the genre... )

I think he is talking specifically about the genre of rock 'n' roll. His last statement above, “The nail has been put into the coffin of Rock And Roll” seems to indicate that. That being said, I can't think of any rock 'n' roll bands or artists who started after 1988 that I would consider distinctive and productive enough to be considered iconic. So I guess I agree with him on that point.

I don't know, to me they just kind of blended in with the other grunge bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains.

I guess Gene and me suffer from the same rock n roll issue in this. We ain't relevant in the current times. I suppose if you were to ask a 20 year old who is a icon now none of our bands or singers names would come out of their mouths.

Sadly enough, that's what a lot of that age group thinks is great....along with any singer of the female persuasion who can bump and grind half dressed with a voice that would make blackboard scratching sound appealing.

My two nieces in their twenties tell me Green Day and RHCP are iconic bands for them and thier friends. I like RHCP but Green Day does nothing for me.

I'd really have to work at it to come up with 100 from memory - total.
I'm not as musically diverse as a lot of you. Given enough time I could probably get to 100, but I wouldn't know their time frame.
I tried to find a list of bands by date last night. Got bits and pieces of stuff, but no real comprehensive list. With a list I'd find 100.
