Feb 2023 article Some of this sounds familiar, so I put it over here in case it's a "duplicate".
Judge for yourself.

Interesting. I can see why it would be annoying to the band. I have always wondered if SNL was even able to legally do the skit. I suppose the age of the song versus the time that the skit was done must have played a factor in that. Nevertheless, “they say” any press is good press. I would say, in a small way, BÖC fans were rekindled, or new ones attained with this funny skit. But, a movie might have been taking it a bit beyond funny. I am happy that BÖC stuck to their values and kept the band from becoming something that they never intended to be. The skit is funny, the movie could have had disastrous, unintended consequences that would have placed a stigma on the group.

I agree that a movie based on the skit could have gone sideways in any number of ways. So I'm glad that BÖC nixed it too.
The skit itself has followed them around for years, BUT it was press that people today still take note of. The phrase "More Cowbell" is now officially in many dictionaries and is still being used all over the place. How many people really associate it with BÖC - who knows.
I do hate it when the cowbell takes over a large part of interviews of band members. Most people listening to the interviews have heard the story a hundred times.

While the skit is funny, it doesn’t have enough gas to last. Spinal Tap worked for its level of improv but a feature length spoof on BÖC would have to clear a very high bar to be innovative and funny and not be a retread of something such as Spinal Tap. I wouldn’t want the band to become a punchline. Glad the idea stopped at just the idea stage.

I just think they should of had the boys on as musical guests. Would of been the proper thing to do.
