Had a friendly argument with a fellow on the beginning of heavy metal. This conversation has been dragged on as nauseum for decades He of course pulled out the Sabbath credentials. But when my MC5 and Blue Cheer rebuttals were ignored I broke out my perfect Crawdaddy commentary.. ... and summarily denounced I was force to put up my last coat of Armored defense..

Cities on Flame is not metal, thanks to Al it swings which eliminates it from that category. Also, the distortion isn't overpowering; OTOH the riff hits a flat five, common in metal. The outro with Joe's walking bass line and Allan's keys precludes it from the metal category. Real metal origins (musically) are probably the Memphis Blues scene; lyrically it's up to debate, Zep, Sabbath?

That's what makes the conversation on this fun. Such varying and different opinions.

I never understood why Zep is considered metal. Transmaniacon is much heavier than Cities. But let's go back to early 1967 and crank "Break on Through (to the Other Side)" - still rocks and sounds fresh today.
